Tocvic MengThe Role
We are a startup developing the world's leading cell-free protein expression system (CFPS+, a novel low-cost and efficient universal protein expression platform), this is fascinating and revolutionary cutting-edge work with significant scientific and economic value. We now have the capability to produce the most efficient static CFPS kit and are also developing dynamic CFPS system for efficient expression at scale.
We are now looking for one to two talents with a molecular biology background (we prefer PhD or PhD candidates in related fields) to join our existing founding team to accelerate the mentioned exciting work.
Holocyte is a material science company, focusing on the R&D of sustainable high-performance materials. Incubated by the Thinclab of Uni. of Adelaide. A kick-start program member of CSIRO.
As in need of mass-produce artificially designed peptides as feedstock, we try to develop unique technologies & expression platform, which has a significant value and a variety of applications in material science, pharmacy and other fields. Therefore, we plan to spin-off a company (General Molecular Expression Service Inc.) specialised in the ‘mass-expression of proteins / functional macromolecules’ to enter the medical materials market later. Although the new company just incorporated, we have already received startup membership support from Thermo Fisher, Entrepreneur grant from Dassault system, and engaged in international collaboration with top research groups and companies of our field.
We now hope to have a talent with a molecular biology background to join our team as co-founder and accomplish the R&D work & build the business together.
Brief BP of spin-off
- Expressing proteins or functional macromolecules using model plant or bacterial cells such as yeast or E. coli, as well as upgraded cell-free protein expression systems (CFPS+) developing by ourselves.
- The peptides expressed are used as feedstock for our high-performance materials.
- Functional proteins or macromolecules expressed are used to manufacture materials for medical applications like hydrogels that can rapidly clot when encountering haemoglobin, and for medical devices or consumables. In short, we develop
- Protein mass-expression platform (mostly focus on next-generation low-cost CFPS)
- Functional macromolecules for material science & medical use
Location of company establishment
General Molecular Expression Service, Inc. will most likely be established in Toronto or Boston depends largely on lab conditions and funding preferences, whilst Australian entity (General Molecular Expression Service Pty Ltd will be subsidiary of North American company yet incorporated) has already been incorporated in Adelaide.SA
Working environment
- Our working environment is very similar to the research group in the university
- Initial R&D work can be carried out in Holocyte's lab, which is located within Waite Campus of Uni. of Adelaide.
Existing Team
- Tocvic M - background in chemical physics, experiences in molecular genetics research, materials science, experiences in corporate finance. Co-founder of Holocyte.
- Mamoru O - background in plant molecular biology and a former research fellow of UoA.
- 2 PhD candidates from UoA
- Several graduates of UoA
Role & requirements
- The co-founder will need to plan business directions (especially in the medical field) and take charge of the core technology development.
- required to be personally involved in R&D experiment, as well as customer engagement in the early stages, and to lead the team to execute R&D and production plans and training new employees in the later stages.
Background requirement
- Molecular biology, Genetics and Medical science background, PhD (or candidate)
- Familiar with molecular biology, protein expression technologies, including constructing vector & plasmid, designing primers, transfection, protein purification and other related operations.
- Familiar with model plant or bacterial cells, and cell-free protein expression systems to express proteins with artificially designed sequences.
- Familiarity with protein structure prediction.
- Solid knowledge of biochemical analysis and operations.
- Knowledge of basic chemistry analysis and operations.
Personal characteristics
- Passionate about your career.
- Honest and responsible.
- Optimistic and open-minded, able to work under pressure.
- Has the initiative and courage to face challenges and accomplish set plans even with insufficient resources.
- Good at observing, coordinating and understanding others in order to build team cohesion and morale.
- Imaginative and diligent thinker. In addition to knowledge and experience, imagination and logical thinking are powerful weapons to accomplish our pioneering work.
Salary and Benefits
As co-founders of the new company, role as both shareholders and employees, we only enjoy the basic salary in the early stage, while most of our personal revenue sources from dividends in the later stage.
