The Role

State of Place is looking for a kick-ass Digital Content Marketing Intern! Join us in transforming citymaking - replacing the top-down, opinion-based, expert-driven approach accessible only to a few with a transdisciplinary, data-driven, evidence-based, community-led one, accessible to the many - in order to help create more livable, equitable, and sustainable places that maximize quality of life. We hope you're as stoked as we are to meet you/us!

*Please see information below, and if you're interested in applying, please send your resume and a cover letter expressing why you're interested and why you think you're a good fit to: [email protected] (Please don't just apply via Angelist).
*

You: An intuitive, I'll-try-anything-once, outside-the-boxer, hustler-at-heart, problem-solver, independent, eager-to-learn, writing-lover, content-creation enthusiast, who is looking to get a taste of the startup rollercoaster, willing to roll with the punches in the juggernaut of a space that is B2G/B2B sales, ready to assist with creating compelling content across multiple platforms, and want to love life while working with a dynamic group of just plain-good people working to make the world (at least slightly) better!

Us: A lean-startup-devotee, data-geeky, digitally-nomadic, passionate group of city-lovers with a mission to (use data to) create more livable, equitable, and sustainable places! More here: www.stateofplace.co

This is where you come in: For years, State of Place has put out copious amounts of content, mostly via its blog, the "Power of Place." Most of this content has been created by our Founder/CEO, Dr. Mariela Alfonzo. But in the past year, most of Mariela's marketing and content creation efforts have been focused on giving virtual key notes, participating in webinars, and moderating on-line panels, leaving her very little time to focus on writing. Yet, we have a LOT to say, and so this is where you come in!

We need your help executing our content creation, focused especially on relaunching our well-received blog. Additionally, you will add to and manage our content calendar, create social-media friendly messaging, images, and videos, and identify and create other content that can help enhance brand awareness and generate marketing qualified leads. You will also assist with website content management.

What you get: This is an unpaid internship, but clearly, you'll get a ton of on-the-job training (you'd be mentored by our Founder/CEO), enjoy flexible working hours, and gain invaluable experience working with an innovative, fast-paced startup. We also encourage interns to develop a professional development project that they can use to demonstrate improving a skill set or a deliverable/example of professional growth during the internship. Finally, while this is an unpaid internship positions, we are happy to assist applicants who require financial assistance with help finding scholarships or other support throughout the internship, as we know many under-represented folx are unable to do unpaid positions but would highly benefit from the experience (we know, our founder was one of these people!). We may also be able to offer a modest stipend to offset personal costs, such as food, internet access, etc. (Please note I had to indicate an arbitrary salary range in order for this post to be visible on Angelist)

Duration: 15-40 hours per week; min. 4 month commitment

Location: Remote (work anywhere in the U.S. with internet access).

More about State of Place

The Skinny: State of Place is an AI-driven, urban design data and predictive analytics software. We have developed machine learning models to extract 150+ datapoints about urban design (e.g., sidewalks, trees, benches, outdoor dining) from digital street-level images and open source data. Our proprietary algorithms aggregate this data into the State of Place Index, which measures an area's quality of place, and is broken down into ten sub-indices that measure aspects of urban design empirically tied to people's choices to live, work, or play in some locations over others. Our software allows users to visualize this information graphically and geospatially to identify areas of need. Our forecasting models have tied the Index to social, economic, health, and environmental value, which our AI-models translate into urban design recommendations most likely to lead to desired impacts. And our scenario tool allows users to see how changes to the built environment impact the Index, and also, uniquely, calculate the return on investment of making those changes. No existing tools capture this kind of micro-scale urban design data at scale. Further, most analytics tools only capture data on existing performance; we generate specific, actionable recommendations for how to create more livable, equitable, and sustainable places, while maximizing value across the quadruple bottom line.

Just after Covid hit in 2020, we hit a significant technological milestone for the company - we automated our data collection process using visual machine learning, allowing us to extract urban design data from digital street-level imagery! This has some exciting implications for all aspects of State of Place, from the enhanced solutions we can now offer our customers, to the kinds of projects we can take on, to our revenue model, and yes, to our sales and marketing strategy. 2021 saw the recruitment of some exciting new customers with fascinating use cases - and 2022 promises to be an even bigger, more impactful year. We hope you can come along with us on this journey.

State of Place History: State of Place can be traced back to 2003, when our Founder/CEO, Mariela, accidentally became a data-geek while creating a tool to objectively measure the built environment characteristics that impact the way people feel about their cities. She soon embraced this new-found title, and began a consulting company, - Urban Imprint - realizing that quantifying what made for good urban design - and calculating its tangible value - was actually the key to convincing people to make cities better (and thereby improve people's lives). Fast forward 13 years later, five years after first offering State of Place as a consulting product, we were awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation's Small Business Innovation Research program that funded the MVP (first saleable version) of our software. Today, we have worked with nearly 40 cities and developers in the US, Europe, and Asia, and counting.
