Ryan McIntoshThe Role
We release 51 billion tons of harmful greenhouse gasses (GHG) into our atmosphere every year. 99.9% of scientists agree that we'll need to get to net zero GHG emissions by 2050 if we want to avoid a global catastrophe. To that end we will need to be able to remove 10 billion tons of CO2 from the atmosphere by 2050 and 20 billion tons/year thereafter.
Cedar develops carbon removal technology for urban environments. Our initial use case captures emissions from vehicles via enclosed-roadway ventilation systems before they have a chance to enter the atmosphere. We supply the recovered CO2 to local, carbon-negative use cases locking it away permanently. By piggybacking our core tech atop existing and underutilized infrastructure like tunnels, Cedar enables viable carbon removal in cities where most of our CO2 emissions come from.
Additionally, our technology can be applied to several other exciting urban use cases.
As a founding team member you'll be getting into the company just as its starting to take off. You'll be given a meaningful equity stake, the ability to influence the future direction of the company and be given countless opportunities for personnal and professional growth.
Oh, and you'll be directly involved in reversing climate change and saving the planet.
About the role
Ideally you should have as many of the following as possible:
-Highly motivated, ambitious, passionate and driven; a true self-starter (and finisher).
-You perform well (better?) under pressure, in a fast paced environment, amid high levels of uncertainty and potential ambiguity.
-Several years of experience in climate tech e.g. solar, wind, battery storage, carbon removal/capture and carbon sequestration/utilization, sustainable mobility/transportation, infrastructure and utilities, etc. If you have deep experience in oil & gas projects/infrastructure and are looking to make the move into climate please apply. We need all the help we can get and hope to convert as many of you as possible!
-Experience in R&D, new hardware/physical product development and technology feasibility validation.
-Deep engineering and technical experience across one or more of the following engineering disciplines: chemical, process, mechanical, mechatronics, electrical. While you don't have to have a degree in each domain you should have enough experience in several of these areas to quickly validate technical feasibility, prototype potential solutions/proof of concepts, and quickly identify technical team skill gaps.
-Ability to source and hire technical talent and manage a cross-disciplinary team of engineers, scientists and technologists.
-A deep background in rapid prototyping, MVP creation, and new product development/commercialization.
-Ability to effectively work on several initiatives/projects concurrently and on accelerated timelines.
-Background in project and/or program management.
-Previous experience as a startup cofounder or founding key hire a major plus.
-Additional plus if you've been through a startup fundraise process.
Lots of exciting things are happening already including being part of the most recent AirMiners Launchpad batch (Y-combinator for carbon removal startups). We also just kicked off as part of the latest cohort with the venture-backed Gener8tor Sustainability accelerator. In addition we're getting lots of inbound interest from potential customers, partners and well-known investors. We also recently pre-sold our first ton of carbon removal and have been getting some really good press.
Compensation
Note that this will initially be an equity-heavy role (with the potential for a modest level of salary/hourly compensation i.e. stipend) atleast until we close our first round of venture funding which we are currently gearing up for. We expect to begin closing investments before the summer. We've already closed a small investment as part of the Gener8tor accelerator. Preliminary VC conversations are already in progress and going well. We've also submitted applications for several additional funding opportunities incl .grants
As a member of the early team the equity compensation will be in the range of 10% - 20% of the company. Following a successful fundraise (targeting early Q2 2023) the salary compensation will be increased to somewhere between $75K - $125K negotiable and commensurate w/ experience and performance up to that point. As the company grows and raises follow-on funding we can further adjust the compensation.
We are based out of New Lab in the Brooklyn Navy Yard (home to over 800 entrepreneurs, engineers, and inventors, solving the world’s biggest challenges) and are open to a hybrid-remote working arrangement - we are building hardware after all!
If you feel that you would be a fit for this role please apply! Also feel free to forward to anyone that might be a good fit.
