C JThe Role
We're looking for an Assistant Production Manager for Manufacturing a physical good as well as assisting with managing a mostly domestic, yet still challenging component supply chain. We're located in the city, on the Brooklyn/ Queens border in Ridgewood.
**Angel is possibly not the best place to post this job as we might get a ton of "Production managers" pushing ads and clicks. While technical expertise is required, media production is not the right kind of production manager ¯_(ツ)_/¯
The main challenge is that we produce a sustainable and recyclable product. On a number of steps we are inserting (recycled) paper into paper and wrapping with paper. We're using hemp plastics in injection molded components. Finding solutions to put this all together has been a challenge but a number of the steps have already been improved during the recent DFMA stage. As production expands we will identify more opportunities to improve the components and processes.
Experience with automated machinery is required as we are looking to build and integrate an automated manufacturing setup. Sorters, conveyors and labelers need to talk and sync to produce finished goods. We will build this line step by step as we ramp up production numbers and eventually hope to get to a complete cycle in time.
As a manufacturing startup based in Queens we're generally going to be looking for used equipment. Finding and evaluating from a distance as well as managing the setup, integration and maintenance is yet another challenge to navigate. There are consultants available but we'll still need to have some knowledge in house as far as basics like changeovers and day to day maintenance.
Then there's staffing on the assembly work. This was never easy in NYC and more difficult now. It's just something we need to stay on top off. Hiring the right people, providing proper training and scheduling are all important skills for any Assistant Production Manager.
We'll need to closely monitor QA and act quick to resolve issues and/or bottlenecks. Our product is not truly sustainable if we have a high defect rate or deal with returns.
Line extensions are actively being developed at contract manufacturers around the US. This type of production comes down to managing the logistics of the raw materials + components in and finished goods out. There's also the opportunity to contribute to the product design and direction for team members.
We're also working with NY State programs to support local manufacturing. Any experience successfully interacting with Itac, Fuzehub, RIT or more, always helpful. There is not only support and consulting available but there's the possibility of subsidized training for staff.
There's a lot to unpack there. This is a full time job and perfect for a candidate that already has the production base but looking to take on more responsibility and fine tune their manufacturing skillset in a small business setting; in NYC no less.
