The Role

Company Overview:

At Amalgam Rx, our mission is to empower the reimagination of therapies and care delivery across the ecosystem. By leveraging our digital platform, marketplace, and billions of data points, we bring together the world’s leading life sciences companies and thousands of providers to change lives.

We create, implement, and distribute exceptional digital products, including patient identification, digital medicine, patient support programs, combination products, clinical decision support tools, trial recruiting, e-consent, and more. Our platform makes it easy to build and scale solutions in health systems and across the life sciences life cycle, from R&D to commercialization.

Our management team has over a century of combined digital health experience. We have deployed clinically validated, and often regulated, technologies across three continents reaching millions of patients. Together, with our partners, we have increased access to care, optimized clinical decisions, and supported patients in their journey to dramatically strengthen outcomes and reduce costs.

You will be part of the Avhana Health team, which recently became an Amalgam Rx company. Avhana is a clinical decision support platform that leading medical groups and health systems use to improve the quality of care and reduce healthcare costs. Our technology has been used to help the lives of millions of patients.

Job Purpose:
The Lead Engineer will be responsible for managing development for our core application. The current Electronic Health Record (EHR) landscape is incredibly fractured. Competing systems don't communicate, have data in inconsistent or conflicting forms, and often have unreliable or insufficiently documented APIs. Part of our work is making these systems work together seamlessly. Your role will be working closely with these EHRs systems to build integrations to help further expand our provider footprint nationwide. You will also be helping optimize and fine tune a system that handles millions of patient interactions every day.

An ideal candidate should have experience working on production Rails and React codebases. Similar experience is welcome.

We're a small team, and you'll need to be able to work quickly and independently. Experience working in large codebases is crucial — our codebase mirrors the complexity of health care.

Empathy is a key quality here. We aren't looking for "rock stars", we want team players. Effective communication and being able to understand the needs of our customers is vital to our shared success.

There are also opportunities for management and mentorship with our additional engineers and others as we grow our team.

Our Stack
Ruby on Rails, React, Sidekiq, Redis, Postgres, Java + DropWizard, Docker

Position Type: Full time position, required 40 hours per week. We are a remote team, but have a few team members located in Baltimore.

Desired Attributes:
Experience developing and delivering maintainable software
Demonstrated experience with web technologies (you don’t have to be a JS expert, but you should be able to work with it.)
Demonstrated experience with software testing and continuous integration
Extensive knowledge of SQL (experience with Postgres is a bonus)
Experience with Ruby or similar interpreted OO languages
Experience with Java or similar

Nice to Haves:
Interest in solving problems in healthcare
Experience mentoring junior developers
Skills in DevOps and Site Reliability Engineering

Compensation Benefits:
Amalgam Rx offers competitive compensation, outstanding benefits, plus equity ownership for all employees.

The Interview Process
You'll need to submit an application to kick things off. If possible, please include a work sample that's related to the tools we use. If you haven't used any of those technologies, that's fine! Related technologies (ex. another MVC web framework, a different JavaScript library, etc.) are great, too. If you don't have work you can share directly for whatever reason, we're happy to discuss that as well to whatever degree is possible.

Once your application is in, there's a three-part interview process.

First, if we like your application, we'll setup a time for an initial phone screen. This isn't a technical interview (that comes next!). We'll discuss your work history, any samples provided, and get to know a bit more about you and your interest in working with us. This call will be around 30 minutes long.

If the first call goes well, we'll schedule a follow-up technical call with one of our engineers. We'll discuss previous work in a more detail, and ask you a standard set of questions to determine your technical ability. This will also be about 30 minutes long.

Finally, if the two screening calls went well, we'll have a more hands-on interview with the rest of the team.
