The Role

About Us

Hi, I’m Colin Swann and I’m the CTO at Newton, Canada's first no-fee cryptocurrency platform. I’ve been at Newton for the last two years and I’m leading our engineering team in developing robust, testable software that will allow us to scale our core business and growing user base.

As the Site Reliability Engineer at Newton, you'll help the team improve the reliability, security, resilience, and performance of our services. You are critical with helping us prevent downtime incidents and providing post-mortems on how we can do better. You’ll provide in-depth operational knowledge of the stack and act as a first-responder and leader during an incident.

The team is currently small, mighty, and growing - so, every team member is a key contributor to our product and success. You’ll work cross functionally with folks such as Jeffrey (Backend Developer), Jonathan (Sr. Software Developer), and Nick (VP of Product). You'll be joining a fully-remote team spread out across Canada.

Newton was created to support a future where financial systems are open to everyone and built to empower people to embrace financial freedom. We believe cryptocurrency plays a role in that future so we're making it more accessible to all Canadians.

What you'll do

  • Implementing the improvements to the reliability, fault tolerance, scalability, and performance of our infrastructure.
  • Managing incidents using your technical know-how to involve the appropriate teams and automate away manual practices.
  • Providing support to our critical services by responding to automated alerts through our on-call rotation.
  • Following up on incidents to propose solutions to improve on our current standards.
  • Driving forward best practices with your background in site reliability engineering.
  • Ensuring we never fail for the same reason twice.
  • Sharing and learning knowledge with the rest of the team.

What we're looking for

  • You have at least a few years of experience designing scalable, reliable systems on GCP, AWS, or Azure (or equivalent cloud service).
  • You have handled on-call shifts for critical systems.
  • You are experienced with chaos engineering (i.e. Gremlin).
  • You are able to dive in and debug live production systems.
  • You enjoy working in a growing system, and writing and deploying code without any downtime.
  • You have experience scripting and/or development (i.e. Linux Shell, Python, Javascript, Java).
  • You are a self-starter, taking initiative in an ambiguous space preferably within a start-up environment.

If you think you have experience that is so close (but doesn't check all the boxes), please still apply! Work experience isn't the full picture, and we know there are many skills that are transferrable. We're committed to creating a diverse team, and encourage everyone to apply.

How we hire at Newton

  1. Phone screen with a member from the Bloom Team (Jade or Agnes)
  2. Interview with Colin Swann, CTO (45 - 60 mins)
  3. Technical challenge with Jeffrey Boisvert or Jonathan Desormeaux (90 mins)
  4. Conduct reference & security checks
  5. Offer! *Following the advice of Canadian health authorities, to mitigate the risk of potential spread of COVID-19 and support social distancing, all recruiting activities including interviews and new hire onboarding will be conducted virtually.

Like Bloom, Newton is committed to a fair and equitable hiring process for all candidates. To ensure that each candidate’s journey is consistent and the selection process is unbiased, the hiring manager will not be responding to any personal messages regarding this role or other opportunities.

Inclusion at Newton

At Newton, we celebrate our inclusive work environment and welcome members of all backgrounds and perspectives to apply. We are committed to providing reasonable accommodations and will work with you to meet your needs. If you are a person with a disability and require assistance during the application process, please don’t hesitate to reach out!
