The Role

Program Manager of Young Adult Success
Full-Time, Salaried

Organization Overview
Breaktime (www.breaktime.org) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit working to end young adult homelessness and empower young adults to pursue their fullest potential. We operate Boston’s first transitional employment program specifically for young adults experiencing homelessness in which young adults launch their careers, nurture their talents, and serve their communities.

Through training focused on financial and personal empowerment, purposeful transitional employment, and post-employment support services, Breaktime empowers young adults experiencing homelessness to build stability in their lives while building resilience in their communities.

Breaktime was launched in 2018 and during the first eight months of the pandemic, Breaktime has grown tremendously to employ 25 young adults experiencing homelessness who led the preparation and delivery of over 600,000 meals to people experiencing food insecurity in Boston -- while earning a living wage and developing career-launching job skills.

Breaktime has been recognized by Forbes 30 Under 30, AIM Next Century Award, and Social Innovation Forum. Breaktime’s work has also been featured in Forbes, Boston Globe, NBC, Boston25 News, and more. Breaktime is backed by the City of Boston, Liberty Mutual Foundation, Harvard University, MassMutual, Blackrock, the Boston Foundation, and more.

Roles and Responsibilities

The Program Manager of Young Adult Success is an organized and detail-oriented individual who thrives in fast-paced and ever-evolving environments. We are looking for someone to support the progress and needs of Breaktime young adults within, outside, and beyond Breaktime’s programming. This role is process-oriented and involves a high degree of coordination between young adults, partners, and staff. The Program Manager of Young Adult Success will have significant responsibilities and opportunities to develop plans and strategies to support the holistic growth of Breaktime young adults.

  • Manage the onboarding/recruitment process of young adults into Breaktime’s programming. Clearly communicate openings with our referral partners, coordinate young adult nominations with referral partners, oversee the application and interview process, organize relevant paperwork, and host welcome events.
  • Make transitional employment site placements of young adults who are currently in Breaktime’s program (once they complete several weeks of training, Breaktime places young adults at one of our site partners who offer transitional employment). Clearly communicate with both young adults and site placement partners to determine fit.
  • Coordinate with transitional employment site partners through frequent check-ins to track young adult’s progress and additional support needs. Address any questions or challenges that the site partners may have. Request and collect timesheets and record the work hours of each young adult. *** Coordinate** with young adults, case managers (at other organizations), and other partners to collectively map out and facilitate a path to success and stability for each individual. Facilitate and attend regular meetings with case managers (at other organizations) to discuss how we can collectively support the growth of young adults. Work with other partners to place Breaktime young adults who may be interested in simultaneously pursuing education and/or other training opportunities.
  • Manage the offboarding process and job (or education) placements of young adults once they graduate Breaktime. Collaborate with the Program Director in developing partnerships with employers and other organizations/agencies to facilitate placements.
  • Organize and track all information relating to recruitment, site placement, offboarding, and more. Devise and implement systems and processes for tracking information relating to young adults’ progress and placements (this may involve implementing new software).
  • Develop critical partnerships with organizations that refer young adults to Breaktime, other organizations that support young adults experiencing homelessness (e.g. housing, education, health), and post-Breaktime job placement partners.
  • Implement evaluation strategies to measure the performance and impact of our program with the Program Director. Determine areas of success and areas of improvement and devise new goals and plans for improvement.
  • Take initiative to innovate, launch, and rapidly iterate on new program initiatives to support the overall well-being and growth of young adults experiencing homelessness.
  • Collaborate with a small team of other Program staff, delegate work, clearly communicate goals and expectations, and provide frequent and relevant feedback.
  • Report directly to the Program Director.

Job Requirements

  • Master of Social Work (MSW) and two years of experience in case management or job placement roles
  • At least two years of experience working directly with vulnerable or at-risk youth
  • Extremely detail-oriented and organized
  • Excitement for joining a fast-paced team environment
  • Quick, nimble learner who excels at mastering new skills
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
  • Outstanding organization and leadership skills--a demonstrated ability to take initiative, stay organized, delegate work, and support team members in meeting responsibilities
  • Advanced proficiency with Google Sheets and Google Forms
  • A passion for working with and empowering young people
  • (Preferred) At least one year of experience working with a startup
