The Role

Here at sweetgreen’s Automation Team we’re working to scale our meal assembly automation - the Infinite Kitchen - into our restaurant fleet. Our goals are to improve the daily routines and workflows for our restaurant staff and enable great customer experiences. We are looking for a Mechanical Engineer to join our hardware team to help us scale up and optimize the Infinite Kitchen.

Location:

Full-time In-Person: 75% based at Sweetgreen’s Boston Automation office in Charlestown, MA. 25% based at Sweetgreen’s Contract Assembly Manufacturing location in Westborough, MA. Up to 25% travel.

What you’ll do:

  • Implement DFM and other cost optimization projects for the Infinite Kitchen, weighing efficiency and cost savings with potential risks. Identify new components or designs that can impact the BOM, create tests to validate and de-risk potential changes. Roll out approved changes to Manufacturing via ECOs.
  • Improve and maintain our CAD and technical documentation with a high level of quality and detail to support our manufacturing team. Update and improve part drawings as designs change and we gain feedback from manufacturing. Work with manufacturing on inspection and testing documentation as required.
  • Own design changes through the entire process, including identifying opportunities, design validation/testing, and implementation. Independently drive timelines and maintain team alignment on project goals and requirements as things inevitably change during the design process.
  • Create and maintain relationships with outside vendors and suppliers. Work to identify opportunities with new and existing suppliers. Research alternatives and work with vendors on how we can improve our design. Hold them accountable when necessary on cost, lead time, communication, etc.
  • Own the IK’s compliance certification with the NSF, maintaining and updating documentation as required to maintain the Infinite Kitchen’s NSF certification.
  • Spend time on the manufacturing floor to support manufacturing initiatives, transfer knowledge and understand issues and inefficiencies with the production process. Implement improvements via updates to designs and technical documentation.
  • Design and execute tests to validate and de-risk design changes. Work closely with the technician team on testing parameters and success criteria.

Who you are:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • 3-6 years of experience in a hardware engineering role with specific experience maintaining ‘real world’ production designs.
  • Experience working within a PLM system, and strong skills for setting up and maintaining documentation systems. Able to draw on previous experience to provide feedback on potential improvements, and own their implementation.
  • Capable of project managing third party DFM projects through the entire project lifecycle. Proficient at communicating and managing third party vendors.
  • Exceptional at timeline management of individual projects and third party vendors
  • Strong drive to own projects top to bottom, identifying potential problems and taking responsibility for their resolution.
  • Excellent CAD skills, specifically with Solidworks.
  • Familiarity with standards of mechanical documentation including geometric dimensioning and tolerancing per ASME Y14.5.
  • Familiar with DFM for commonly used fabrication processes including CNC Machining, Injection Molding, Casting, Sheet Metal fabrication, Wire/Cable, Welding, Casting, and assembly.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and ability to create and maintain polished documentation.

What you'll get:

  • Highly competitive pay + bonus plan
  • Three different medical plans to suit your and your family's needs
  • Dental and Vision insurance
  • Flexible PTO plan
  • 401k program
  • Employee HSA and FSA
  • Complimentary greens
  • An opportunity to make a real impact on the people around you, both by growing them and by connecting them to real food
  • To live the sweetlife and celebrate your passion + purpose
  • A collaborative team of people who live our core values and have your back
  • A clear career path with opportunities for development, both personally and professionally
  • Free sweetgreen swag
