The Gemology Associate at The RealReal supports the Fine Jewelry and Watch department through advanced gemological testing of colored gemstones with Raman spectroscopy, gemology specific quality control and helping to maintain and organize TRR owned training materials. They are responsible for providing in the moment gem testing and feedback, creating a safe space and building confidence in the team. In their day to day interactions they must echo The RealReal’s values and standards. Counseling on content, best practices, and diamond and colored stones specific needs; the role demands inventive problem solving and excellent interpersonal skills.
You are a collaborator and passionate person who identifies opportunities and strives for business success. You have basic colored stone knowledge and experience with advanced gem testing equipment and application. This role will report to the Expert Gemologist. Key partners include: Pricing and Authentication Gemology Team, Fine Jewelry & Watch Production, and Pricing and Authentication Jewelry Team.
What You Get To Do Every Day
- Be a crucial part of the inbound pipeline by testing gemstones with Raman spectroscopy prior to product assortment and distribution Perform high volume QC and maintain daily metrics
- Support and develop FJW Specialist new hires during ramp-up period
- Collect and report data in partnership with the Pricing and Authentication Gemology Team to provide detailed feedback and propose trainings to the Production Management team
- Support and assist processing gemological inquiries and maintain metrics
- Uphold accuracy, consistency and quality of: standards and methodologies, gem identification through Raman spectroscopy, weight estimation QC, performance metrics and system information
- Support in facilitating in the moment trainings when giving QC feedback
- Ensure all laboratories are equipped with necessary and functioning tools, including performing regular maintenance and calibration
- Organizing and maintaining internal database of TRR owned training materials
- Participate in data image collection
What You Bring To The Role
Minimum Requirements:
- Experience using Raman spectroscopy
- Baseline knowledge of gemstones and some minerals; degree in mineralogy or geology a plus
- GIA Graduate Gemologist diploma or equivalent (not required, but a plus)
- Fluency in GIA grading standards for diamonds, colored stones and pearls
- Diamond and colored stone weight estimation know-how and proficiency
- The ability to prioritize multiple time-sensitive tasks and/or escalate issues
- The skills to work effectively and collaboratively in teams and cross-functionally to meet shared goals and
- deadlines
- Attention to detail, strong organizational and communication skills, geared towards large groups
- Solid analytical skills
- The ability to prove in person feedback

The expected hourly rate for this role is $30.00 - $30.00 . To determine starting pay we carefully consider a variety of factors, including primary work location and an evaluation of a candidate’s skills, experience, market demands, and internal parity. Additionally, salary is just one component of TRR’s total rewards package. Depending on role, employees may also be eligible for a bonus program, incentive pay and benefits.
