Head of Engineering

We are building an application and ML platform to help developers build the next generation of intelligent applications. The platform includes Spice.ai, an open-source ML runtime that helps developers build AI-driven applications, and an ML-ready, web3 data platform, Spice.xyz.

As Head of Engineering, you will lead the technical strategy and execution to ensure we make and execute the right technical bets to win and grow developer mindshare and platform usage in the web3 space.

⭐️ As the Head of Engineering you will work side-by-side with the founders on defining and building the Spice platform.

Your responsibilities

• Leading the company-wide technical strategy and execution.
• Build and grow an engaged technical community and industry-leading thought leadership.
• A leader and outstanding contributor to the Spice.ai open-source project.
• Creating, designing, and building the web3 data platform, AI/ML architecture, backends, and algorithms of Spice.ai.
• Take ownership and drive initiatives for improving the product.
• Leading and executing the strategy for attracting, hiring, and retaining top technical talent.
• Leading, executing and communicating the strategy for technology platforms, partnerships, and external relationships.

Your first 90-days

• Your first month - contribute to and ship Spice.ai and data platform releases.
• 30-60 days - take leadership of the technical execution of in-flight projects.
• 60-90 days - take leadership of the company’s technical architecture and long-term technical strategy going forward.

This is a hands-on role. Expect to join everyone, including the CEO, in building and coding for the first 6-9 months, and then to hire and scale a bigger team from our next funding round (timing dependent on business traction).

What we're looking for

• A proven, hands-on technology leader.
• Experience in startups, open-source projects, AI/ML, data platforms, and distributed systems.
• Experience in designing, implementing, training, scaling, and shipping production machine learning systems.
• A track record of good design, architectural, engineering, and product decisions.
• Excellent communication skills, comfortable with both deep technical writing and conference presentations.
• Ability to ramp up quickly and hit the ground running.
• Ideally experience in web3, blockchains, crypto, DAOs, and financial services although not required.
