The Company:
Open Bionics Ltd is a Bristol based company who designs, develops and manufactures bionic limbs for amputees. Our mission is to: “Create and Democratise Technology that Enhances the Human Body”. In other words, we want to make beautiful bionic limbs more accessible and to turn disabilities into superpowers! We’ve won several awards including most recently, Hanger Clinics Innovation Award for 2019. Please visit our website to find out more about us: www.openbionics.com.
Role Specification:
Are you an innovative person with a passion for making a difference to people’s lives? Are you ambitious and think you are able to push the boundaries to make our technology truly groundbreaking?
We are super excited to be recruiting for a Senior App Developer to join our Research & Development team at Open Bionics! If you’re an existing senior developer looking for an exciting move or somebody who believes they have the aptitude and potential to move into a senior developer role, then this could be the job for you.
The role itself involves:
Working with the R&D Manager to define the system requirements for Open Bionic’s digital services,
Developing digital infrastructure and services to support the Hero Arm.
Creating Android and iOS applications using the React framework.
Working with the embedded software team to manage the app to Hero Arm interface.
Any experience with the React framework and back-end development would be beneficial to your application, as would experience with Bluetooth and over-the-air updates.
Challenge
We’d like to offer over-the-air software updates for Hero Arms in the field. Implementing this will be one of your initial responsibilities as the Senior App Developer. As a means of demonstrating your technical capabilities, please submit a proposal of no more than 2 sides of A4 detailing how you would approach this. You may choose the format in how you wish to present your response.
Things you may want to include are:
What are the options for implementing such a system?
Which option do you think is best and why?
What systems would be used?
What resources would this require?
What experience do you have that would aid you in implementing this system?
You can assume the following:
The Hero Arm can connect to a smartphone via Bluetooth
And it has a bootloader (so is capable of updating itself on receipt of new firmware).
We have a strong preference for any applications to be built using the React framework.
Another key skill we’re looking for is the ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to others in a multi-disciplinary team. You can assume your audience is technical but not in your area of expertise.
