The Role

The salary range for this position is $133,046 - $174,192.

We are looking for a Senior Device Engineer - Trap Development to design, model and deliver new surface ion trap architectures. Partnering with a cross-functional team, the Senior Device Engineer will work to develop tools and systems in support of ion trap design and analysis including scripting, FEA modeling, mask layout, experiment design and data analysis. This critical team member will work to drive future designs through a disciplined engineering approach as we progress on our mission to build the world’s best quantum computers to solve the world’s most complex problems.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, maintain and continuously improve in-house Python framework in support of ion trap design and layout
  • Generate 3D models for FEA analysis of both thermal and electromagnetic ion trap properties
  • Create experiment plans to test new trap designs
  • Develop and maintain scripting used for equipment control and data collection
  • Analyze results and generate clear, concise reports for a broad audience including junior engineers and executives
  • Coordinate with microfabrication engineers, package designers and AMO physicists to help define development areas for next generation ion traps

You’d be a good fit with:

  • 5+ years of Python programming experience
  • 5+ years of electromagnetic modeling experience with Ansys or Comsol
  • Experience transforming theory to R&D prototypes
  • Microfabrication experience
  • Experience writing experiment plans and coordinating with a cross-functional team to collect the required data
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Engineering or Science

You’d be a great fit with:

  • PhD in physics or engineering
  • 5+ years of experience in surface ion trap design
  • Experience trapping ions with surface ion traps
  • Experience with CAD tools such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks
  • General knowledge of complex optical, electrical or mechanical products and systems
  • Experience with optics, photonics, opto-electronic modules, vacuum assemblies and cryogenic systems
  • Best-in-class cross-functional communication, collaboration & presentation skills
  • Ability to be on-site every day
