About the team

Roku offers millions of options to our users: movies, episodes, news, and channels from all around the world. The ML Recommendations engine is crucial to user happiness by recommending the most personalized channel or content they would love to watch. Solving this customer problem is why we’re actively seeking an Engineering Manager to drive further innovation in the channel and content recommendations.

About the role

The person in this role will leverage their leadership and technical skills, business intuition, and analytical thinking to build best-of-class machine learning products. Hence, communication and presentation skills are essential. The role requires high technical aptitude, problem-solving abilities, motivation, and exceptional attention to detail. We’re always in “build mode” because we’re a company of data-focused builders, especially on the data-driven team. Every day, you’ll look at what exists and find ways to improve it.

What you will be doing

• Develop and manage a team of exceptional Software and ML engineers who build and own the next generation of content recommendations and other algorithms/systems to make the experience for millions of Roku users 100% personalized and unique.
• Define and execute the technical vision and roadmap for recommendations, in alignment with the product and business goals. Drive innovation and experimentation to enhance personalized experiences and outcomes at Roku.
• Ensure the quality, performance, reliability, and security of the recommendation platform and services, and establish best practices and standards for engineering excellence.
• Partner with cross-functional stakeholders, such as product managers, designers, data scientists, and other engineering teams, to understand user needs, define requirements, and deliver solutions that meet or exceed expectations.
• Mentor and coach your team members, foster a culture of excellence and innovation, and help shape the future of recommendations at Roku.
  

We're excited if you have

• 8+ years of relevant software/machine learning engineering experience, with 3+ years of engineering management experience in a fast-growing public company.
• Proven track record of leading and delivering large-scale, high-performance, and reliable recommendation systems and services, preferably in the streaming, e-commerce, or media domains.
• Strong knowledge of machine learning technologies and methodologies such as regression, classification, tree-based approach, neural networks, sequence-based, and NLP approaches like W2V or Bert.
• Strong CS fundamentals and good understanding of system architecture. Experience in big data technologies – streaming architecture, data pipelines (Spark, EMR, S3, Airflow).
• Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills, and the ability to influence and drive decisions across multiple teams and levels.
• Bachelor’s in computer science, Statistics, or related field, but a Ph.D. or Masters in CS or related fields is preferred.
