The Role
InStage is growing and is looking for a Software Engineering Lead to join our team. InStage is a remote-first start-up based out of Toronto, Ontario. This role is open to applicants across Canada.
About InStage
InStage offers simulation-based, remote training experiences using virtual reality (VR) and video conferencing technology, helping individuals develop the soft skills they need to succeed in the workplace. Through realistic practice sessions, participants can learn how to introduce themselves, deliver presentations, communicate effectively and sharpen their interview skills in an immersive training environment.
InStage offers training experiences to corporate clients as well as some of North America's largest colleges, including Seneca, Humber & Fanshawe.
About You
You're a engineering manager or a engineering lead who has 1+ year experience in running an engineering team.
You have a bias for action, deal well with ambiguity and embrace rapid change.
As our Software Engineering Lead, you will:
• Report directly to the CEO
• Lead a team of 3 engineers with capabilities to oversee the entirety of the product from the technical lens and make significant contributions to the backend technology.
• Make and reach commitments to quality and on-schedule delivery of new features
• Attract, hire, retain, mentor and motivate your team of talented software engineers in a remote workforce
• Lead architecture and development, and participate in the design of new features in an agile environment
• Create and deliver onboarding process and standards for new engineering team members
• Promote engineering best practices and help define technical roadmap (implementation, testing, deployment, and maintenance) for the team
• Possess a customer-centric philosophy and a drive to be hands-on
As our Software Engineering Lead, you have:
• At least 5 years’ experience in software development, with at least two years as a software engineer or backend engineer in a high-paced, dynamic start-up
• Demonstrated the ability to lead a small team of software engineers, including hiring, coaching and mentoring of team members using Agile methodologies
• Strong experience in backend engineering and conceptual understanding of modern game engines (Unreal)
• Excellent asynchronous communication skills (Writing, Flow Charts, Diagrams, Looms, etc.)
• Solid foundation in computer science with strong competencies in software design
• Experience with modern web frameworks, including JavaScript frameworks (React) and Python (Django), and with AWS Infrastructure, specifically Elastic Beanstalk, EC2, RDS, and S3
• Experience integrating with third-party APIs
• Experience with Git and GitHub
