The Role

You believe design is the lifeforce of the universe. That just a few milliseconds after the Big Bang finger-snapped a bazillion atoms into being…. design was born. Your friends say you’re a perfectionist. Your frenemies say you can be rather “observant” and sometimes even slightly “critical”! But behind your every Unsolicited Design Critique™ is a desire to restore order, simplicity, and elegance into the word. It fills you with a sense of purpose — and it’s why you love being a designer so, so much.

Our craft is about so much more than prettifying pixels. At Transit, we know design can transform urban life. It can seduce people into choosing active transportation alternatives over environmentally destructive ones. It shapes how people get from a-to-b — whether they choose to walk, or bike, or bus, or train. It brings people closer together, makes public space more accessible, and empowers cities to thrum with the electric thrill of endless opportunity.

That’s why we need you as our next product designer.

📝 Responsibilities

  • Help us further Transit’s three missions: to make it easier for folks to lead a car-free life, to persuade car owners to give up their keys, and to give a voice to transit riders, cyclists and pedestrians in order to reshape cities for the better
  • Design new features that adhere to the style of our top secret, yet-to-be-released app redesign
  • Master the app until it feels as natural to you as a bicycle might: you should be intimately familiar with Transit’s various screens, features, UI elements, and be able to intuit the reasoning behind our design decisions
  • Make design calls based on data (sometimes) and following your gut and impeccable taste (more often than not)
  • Improve and maintain our internal design system (a Sketch library… sorry Figma fanatics) so that designing and shipping new features is a process that gets perpetually easier
  • Measure the success of your designs using analytics, and work with developers to keep an eye on feature performance. “The numbers don’t lie” — Shakira
  • Be open to (but also opinionated about) features suggested by Transit users, transit agencies, and your fellow teammates

✅ Requirements

  • Strong UX and UI skills. Separating the 2 would be a sin. 😱
  • You know product design is an art and a science. You’re able to look at data to help guide decisions but know just as well that numbers don’t shed any light on what looks or feels right — sometimes you just know
  • Be an avid user of Transit and its wheelhouse of features. People love our app because we’re transit riders ourselves — the best way to build a great product is for it to be scratching your own itch
  • Experience designing at least one mobile app, and hopefully some desktop web apps as well
  • Maniacal obsession for details like font sizes, margins, colours and their consistency across screens
  • You’re so detail-oriented that you’ll make the subject line of your application email “Skeuomorphism is back”
  • Be sharp, be smart, be creative. Here, there ain’t no such thing as "I tried everything”
  • Be humble, listen to feedback, be open to criticism
  • Know your way around Sketch and Zeplin
  • Be passionate about cities, urbanism, public transit, design, technology, and/or all of the above
  • Speak and write the French and English good
  • Be based in Montreal or be willing to relocate here

💯 Would be nice if…

  • You’ve got experience using Principle (or other prototyping tools)
  • You’re comfy-cozy digging into user behavior data in Amplitude, Mixpanel, Google Analytics

Don’t feel like all the requirements apply to you but you still think you’d be a great fit for Transit? Don’t hesitate to apply!

💰 Compensation and benefits

$90,000-$110,000 CAD per year, based on experience

  • Cost of living adjustments are possible for employees who are not based in Montreal
  • Stock options
  • Comprehensive medical and dental coverage
  • 5 weeks vacation
  • Four-day work week at full-time salary (yes, you read that right)
  • Apple laptop and equipment
  • $1,500 annual mobility allowance. STM? BIXI? Uber? E-bike? Scooter? Going car-free is free at Transit.
  • A training and development budget
  • Generous maternal/paternal/parental leave policy. Gotta fill out our tandem bicycles somehow!
  • Flexible work hours
  • Spend your days surrounded by first-rate teammates and the best view of Montreal and/or [insert exotic Zoom background]
  • When you’re in the office: you’ll be in urbanist heaven, surrounded by Mile End’s urban gardens, bike paths, BIXI docks, bus stops, a metro station, and limitless restaurants… cafés… bars… concert halls… bagel boutiques…
  • Communal lunch-and-learn with free food in the office each week

👨‍💻 A note on diversity

Public transit is used by overwhelmingly more women and people of colour than other modes of transportation. We try to make sure the diversity of our users is reflected in the team that serves them. Because when we include people of all races, genders, sexual orientations, ages, and identities — we end up building a better app for everyone who uses Transit.

We encourage candidates of all ages, genders, origins and orientations to apply. If you’d like to specify which pronouns you use, feel free to include that in your application email.

And if your lived experience has given you a unique perspective on all things transportation, mobility, accessibility, urbanism? Let us know, and we’ll make sure your application gets the attention it merits.

📬 How to apply

We'd love to hear from you. Send your resume, portfolio and other relevant info to [email protected]

PS: When you apply, let us know how you heard about the position! Whispers, grapevines, middle-of-the-night Google searches? We’re dying to know.
