The Role

Headquartered in Malibu, California, HRL is on the leading edge of semiconductor technology, conducting pioneering research and advancing the state of the art for our diverse defense, aerospace, and commercial customers.

As the section manager of the Microfabrication Technology Lab’s (MTL’s) Data Services team, you will be responsible for leading a group of 5-7 software engineers and data scientists whose mission is to build and maintain tools based on data generated by HRL’s cleanroom operations. These tools include a manufacturing execution system (MES), engineering database (EDB), statistical process control (SPC) management system, and several other third-party and in-house systems. As head of the group, you will also be responsible for internal customer outreach: understanding the technology requirements of our diverse customer base and communicating with HRL staff to understand their data needs. Since Data Services is a relatively new group at HRL, you will also have an opportunity to establish the fledgling group’s policies and dev ops infrastructure. This role is high-impact; the services you build and maintain will be an essential part of the function of the Microfabrication Technology Lab and of HRL overall.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Manage a group of 5-7 software engineers and data scientists
Build and maintain MTL’s data infrastructure, which includes MES, EDB, SPC, and a number of other third-party and in-house tools
Lead internal customer outreach activities: gain an understanding of what customer needs are and work with them to plan infrastructure and tools
Lead a “professionalization” effort within the group, bringing industry knowledge and best practices to the group’s day-to-day operations
Implement a dev ops infrastructure, including version control, CI/CD pipelines, and robust test environments
Recruit and retain a high-performing, versatile staff capable of supporting a suite of data tools that span multiple languages and operating systems
Stay abreast of new tooling options; provide recommendations for enhancing, upgrading, deprecating dev ops infrastructure as appropriate

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

3+ years in a professional software development environment
Previous experience in a project or people management role is not required, but is a plus
Familiarity with MES, SPC, and data automation systems in a semiconductor processing context or other production environment is a plus
Demonstrated expertise in multiple programming languages (preferably including C/C++/C# and Python)
Strong understanding of relational databases, including experience with DB administration, schema creation and management, and SQL queries
Strong understanding of core computer science fundamentals including data structures, algorithms, and computer architectures
Basic familiarity with statistics and data science
Strong communication skills; ability to write and maintain comprehensive, readable documentation

EDUCATION DESIRED:

BS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field
Formal people and project management training is a plus
Certifications and other training related to semiconductor processing including statistical process control and 6-sigma is desirable, but not required
