The Role

ROLE DESCRIPTION: Lead/Senior Electronics Engineer
Over the past 3 years, Sportable has designed a portable, cm-level accuracy, tracking system for rugby players and ball, which is being trialled by a number of the best teams in the industry to take their performance to the next level.

Because we are also alway looking to grow, commercially and technically, we are looking for a dedicated engineer to take a lead role in the Electronics design and validation of our products, new and existing. With a minimum of 5 years’ experience in the industry, the candidate would have gone through most of the development cycle of a hardware solution from its architecture to production launch.

This is a true opportunity to become a central part of a talented multi-disciplinary R&D engineering team (encompassing Electronics, RF, SW development all the way from embedded to web frontend, Mechanical or Data Science) and a chance to step into a highly motivating start-up environment where one can make a direct impact to our world class customers by solving complex technical problems.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the Electronics Design, Validation and Industrialisation of wearable wireless products, whilst keeping a close watch on quality, cost and timeline.
  • Tackle complex technical problems with a balanced mix of analytical and hands-on approach.
  • Communicate clearly with (and support!) the rest of the engineering team.
  • Be the main point of contact with external suppliers (EMS, PCB Fab, Test houses): being responsible for the quality of their deliveries and with regular visits to their sites (in the UK) part of that relationship.

Technical Skills/Past Experience:

  • Proven record of delivering digital and analog Electronics designs from architecture to production, preferably with a focus on battery powered, MCU-based applications.
  • Technically fluent in Firmware, Mechanical and Manufacturing engineering.
  • Have gone through the certification process (CE and/or FCC) in the past - with specific emphasis on EMC troubleshooting.
  • Experience working with products including RF (GPS, BT, UWB).
  • Comfortable with eCAD tools for Schematics at least - Layout using Altium would be a plus.
  • Proficient with test equipment (oscilloscope, dmm, logic analyzer …); good soldering skills for debug purposes (down to 0201 packages)
  • Understanding of Embedded C/C++ for microcontrollers and familiarity with standard interface bus: SPI, I2C, UART, USB
  • Capable of considering the product full life cycle while designing and validating: DfM, DfT, DtC and EMI
  • (nice to have) Have led a small team of engineers in the past.
  • (nice to have) Experience in a smaller company or start-up environment where the portfolio of responsibilities tends to be broader.
  • (nice to have) Proficient in python to contribute to the HW test SW tools.

Personal qualities:

  • Attention to detail
  • Excellent time management
  • Hands-on attitude / Technically curious
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Interest in current sports trend and analytics

Reporting to:

  • Head of HW

Directly interacting with:

  • Project manager
  • Embedded Software Team / SW Product Owner
  • Mechanical Design Engineer
  • Suppliers: EMS, Distributors, Test houses

Location:

  • COVID Restrictions allowing, the job would be located at least 4 days a week in our office close to Old Street in London.
  • Although Sportable is really focused on flexibility for its employees, 2020 has also taught us that, for hardware related tasks, nothing replaces putting all our hands, prototypes, minds and tools in the same room - which we have managed to do in a safe and enjoyable way!
