The Role

Description
We are looking for a creative, empathetic and astute engineering leader to lead and grow our Lisbon-based engineering teams.

Lisbon is the home base for three of our product engineering teams. The Biometrics engineering team collaborates with our research organisation to build cutting-edge biometric verification products; our Service Tools team designs and ships the tools used by expert human analysts to rapidly and accurately identify fraud; and the Operations team helps our internal teams build leverage to efficiently serve Onfido’s customers. Our Lisbon office is also home to staff from across our engineering group, including document verification, infrastructure and product support.

You’ll be instrumental in shaping our biometric identity products, scaling our operational teams, and further expanding our Lisbon technology organisation. As the senior engineering leader in the Lisbon office, you’ll also be a mentor and guide for engineers, testers, and leads in the organisation.

Onfido is the new identity standard for the internet. Our AI-based technology assesses whether a user’s government-issued ID is genuine or fraudulent, and then compares it against their facial biometrics. That’s how we give companies like Revolut, Barclays, Babylon Health and BlaBlaCar the assurance they need to onboard customers remotely and securely.

We founded our Lisbon office three years ago - since then, it’s grown from a single engineer to over 40 engineers, designers and product managers.

Requirements
You will:

Own the technical and business outcomes for multiple engineering teams at Onfido
Guide, manage, motivate and mentor engineering leads and engineers
Work with product managers, engineers and leads to shape the technical strategy and approach for your teams
Review technical roadmaps and help your team make key technical decisions
Recruit great engineers and managers, and coach them as they advance in their careers
Manage and develop processes, as needed, to help engineering teams ship effectively
Help scale Onfido’s technology and organisation overall, as one of the engineering group’s senior leaders
Support your engineering teams in achieving a high level of technical quality, reliability, and ease-of-use.
Be an ambassador for Onfido in the Lisbon tech community
You may be a good fit if:

You have managed large and fast-growing teams at a technology company
You emphasise trust, empathy and servant leadership
You have strong technical foundations and an eye for what makes for great software products
You are adept at recruiting, managing, and mentoring high performing engineers and engineering managers
You have a high bar for quality
You’re both idealistic and pragmatic - you know how to make a product vision real
You are experienced building a product using agile and lean frameworks
