I want to live in a zesty world where people get paid to do what they love. In a nutshell, I help quirky people launch their dream businesses. I do everything from untangling...more messy ideas, strategic planning, branding, experience design and creating digital assets from scratch (websites, social media, payment platforms, process automation, videos/animations and more. My motto is "dream big, start small." Creating a business from the ground up is hard. I make it easy.
Founder, Digital Mentor, Community Builder, Online Instructor, Vlogger
2013 - Present (almost 7 years)
I help people who like maps get jobs though online classes, coaching & a story sharing platform. My first client was National Geographic! Designing it was so much fun:...more https://geopivot.org. The hardest part was making 15 different software programs play nice together and look like one seamless thing. The next hardest part was making something boring (professional development) into a fun brand/community that people want to be a part of.

Tribe Wanted Bali
2015 (6 months)
Basically, a bunch of really cool people from all around the world met up at coworking space made of bamboo to turn their ideas into businesses. They describe it as "a tribe...more of like-minded, motivated, curious, purposeful people co-working in the jungle." I was a member of the tribe for 5 months and the leader for 2. I helped people explore multiple business models for their ideas, come up with strategic plans and help them understand which software/digital tools they needed.
This job was fun! I got to write my own class and teach Master's/Bachelor's degree students how to kick ass with maps. The best part was keeping up with changing technology....more GIS (Geographic Information Science) is a fast-moving field and I always worked hard to show my students how to use all the latest tools and techniques. My class was a lot different from others in the program because I focused on job skills and how to handle real-world challenges. https://www.e-education.psu.edu/geog487/
Research & Innovation Manager - Spatial Sciences Institute
2013 - 2014 (about 1 year)
I went through a lot of whiteboard markers in this position. I got to design solutions to really hard problems using science & technology, then go out and sell it to...more the movers and shakers of the world. I managed a team of 4 developers, 30 projects and a million-dollar budget. We designed custom software that incorporated maps + apps + giant databases + decision modeling for government agencies, non-profits and startups.
Program Development/Marketing Manager of a Tech Research Institute
2012 - 2013 (about 1 year)
My job was to translate super complicated, jargony tech services into something decision-makers could understand. My institute built custom software with maps (spatial decision...more support systems). I met with influencers and high-level managers to persuade them to work with our team. The coolest things I got to do were give a talk @ the World Bank Innovation Lab and meet with a Senator @ The White House.
I LOVED this job! The coolest parts were teaching digital skills (database design, spatial statistics, data modeling) to researchers in 30 countries, translating grant proposals...more into actual projects and being on teams with super-smart people. Two of my bosses won the Nobel Prize when I was there! On a day-to-day basis, I managed many multi-year research projects, a team of 20 people and designed SOPs for intricate techie projects.
I run 2 businesses, but they are mostly on auto-pilot (I currently work ~ 10 hours a week). I'm looking for a remote position with a company that is unique and working on a game changing idea. Combining art, design, science, technology & creative story telling makes me really happy.
I filled out this profile even though I really, really didn't want to. I hate filling out super long forms and work history details! Does anyone really care what my GPA in high school was??? I taught myself how to do all kinds of cool stuff, like how to start dream businesses online, how to make super cool websites and how to build my own online school.
Companies that intrigue me are: 1) solving complex problems with technology 2) teaching/educating/empowering their customers 3) helping people travel/access unique opportunities 4) helping people start/run their own business 5) are fun and approachable (business jargon makes me sleepy).
What's the most useful business-related book you've ever read?
You Are a Badass
If money were not an issue, what would you be doing right now?
Exactly what I'm doing, but on a sail boat.
What words of advice would you give your younger self?
Trust your own voice.
What's the most creative thing you've ever done?
That's hard. I do weird things all the time. I have a parachuting beach zebra on my website (zesty.world). I lived in a tree house in the jungle and painted all the walls with swirly murals. My only furniture was 15 bean bag chairs and a bed.
What's your super power?
Seeing other people's potential, making them believe it and then creating a stage for them to shine on.
What's the best way for people to get in touch with you?
Facebook Messenger or What's App. I truly hate email, but I check it like a million times a day. It's just so boring, you know? Not enough pictures, just endless lines of text...
What words of wisdom do you live by?
Trust the Process
What aspects of your work are you most passionate about?
The moment when my clients see what I made for them and LOVE IT! It's fun trying to figure out what people really want vs. what they say they want. When I nail it, we both feel amazing.
What's something you wish you had done years earlier?
Nothing. I'm happy with my decisions. I can't do everything @ the same time. I learned a lot from every new project/position I took on. I feel like an entirely different person every few years b/c I'm always learning new stuff.
