What is your office environment like?
TechCrunch did a video on it not too long ago you can check out here: http://techcrunch.com/2014/07/08/tc-cribs-pocket-gems-where-the-office-gets-snazzed-up-100-at-a-time/ Generally speaking, it's an open plan, collaborative working environment, organized by game studios and teams working on a single projects. To deal with the noise of the open plan layout, we give everyone Bose noise-canceling headphones so you can focus when you need to. There are a silly number of game consoles, gaming PCs, ping pong, and more over in the common area where we provide lunch and dinner. We also bring have internal and external speakers on a variety of topics from OpenGL to Pixar's storywriting process. We have periodic meditation and yoga sessions in the back of the office, and happy hours on Fridays. Send me a message if you want learn more!

What are some of the toughest engineering problems Pocket Gems is facing now?
A few things come to mind: (1) building out our own custom-built 3d engine & toolset - our latest game, War Dragons, was the first to launch on our own engine, and we're just getting started. Lots of tough problems around squeezing out performance and beautiful visuals on ever-improving hardware, and making awesome tools for our artists and designers. (2) multiplayer synchronous gaming - we see the future of core games on mobile looking more like PC/console, and as such we've started building more real-time gameplay into our games. This comes with plenty of challenges - security, handling adverse network conditions, cloud vs client hosting, etc. (3) more robust server-side functionality (e.g., events, security, cross-device) - our servers have always been a key part of our gameplay, but demands are only increasing. We're building in robust events functionality, tackling security (super important for PvP games), working on Android/iOS interoperability and more. This text box is too small to expand in detail on all of these, but shoot me an email at brian@pocketgems.com if you want to chat more!
