The Ideal candidate : can fluently describe Plano-Convex vs Plano-Concave and compare Aspherical vs regular. Know interference effects, and wavefront construction, DBEF recycles polarized light, Bragg Filter vs Fresnel Reflection and succinctly explain the physics on a whiteboard.
Be fluent in MatLab, LightTools, ZeeMax or other modern Optics modeling tools, and show you can wield the UI to bend light rays to your whim.

Knowledge that will distinguish you from the field : of the mechanics of Liquid Crystal Optics. Know the difference in design of an Solid-State LED vs Solid-State Laser. Between CdSe QD, and in-plane emissions efficiency. Between a Phosphor, a Flurophor, a Chromophor and a Lumiphor - and be able to articulate examples and the key aspects of each.
Must be up to date with meta-surface lenses, metal-mesh polarizers, structured light diffusers, and chat over the latest news on UNCP's at lunch time.
