Examining the ways technology is used in the sex industry
Research Assistant, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, SPSS · Aiding in the development of online-specific research methods, survey and interview… · More instrument development, and data collection and analysis. I have co-written the first ever survey that will be filled out by two different populations: people who pay for sexual services and people who deliver sexual services. This survey is the first of its kind to ask substantively identical questions to two very different populations. Analyses will be the first to compare and contrast thoughts, dispositions, and behaviours of buyers and sellers. I am leading the research marketing and participant recruitment phase of the project.
The purpose of this research is to better understand the diverse ways that Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) such as cell phones, social media, message boards, websites, and the internet more generally, influence how people involved in the sale and purchase of sexual services develop connections, exchange information, and negotiate the details of the sex for money exchange. Understanding the experiences and attitudes of both service providers and clients is important towards the goal of accumulating evidence that can be used to address the concerns that have been raised by various community groups, health agencies and legislators.
I have spent my academic career applying social theory and advanced data visualization techniques to understand health related behaviours of diverse populations. I have worked as a freelance research consultant and data analyst, applying my skills to help better understand complex social problems.
I am part of a three person research team who used innovative and multi-dimensional research marketing, design, and sampling methods to collect the largest ever voluntary sample of a highly stigmatized and difficult to reach population -- men, women, and couples who pay for sexual services in Canada. Our ability to think differently about what is arguably one of the most complex research problems to date, has garnered nation-wide media attention for our efforts. With data in hand, I am using a similarly dynamic approach to analyze and visualize the results of our research and reveal theoretically driven insights into the socio-cultural forces that inform the dispositions and behaviours of this population. I aim to bring these advanced skills in research design, data analysis, social theory, and result dissemination to the professional job market as a research consultant and data analyst.
I'm seeking the opportunity to work with people who think differently about common problems. I bear a unique theoretical, methodological and analytic skill set that I am eager to apply in new and challenging contexts.
