“Pat invested in my startup, HeardAbout, in 2011 -- one of his first ever angel investments. It was obvious Pat was betting on me more than he was betting on the idea. I was a young, inexperienced first-time founder, but Pat saw some potential in me. He and I had built up a good relationship when I led some marketing initiatives for his previous venture, Webmail.us.
Long story short, the startup never took off, but it was a huge learning experience for the both of us. It's been fun to see Pat's investment thesis continue to grow in sophistication in the years since, both in how he vets teams as well as the ideas they are working on.
One consistent trait Pat has always maintained is a deep respect for and desire to work closely with the founders he invests in. I think this stems from his roots as a founder himself, allowing him to empathize with the wild ups and downs and tough decisions founders go through.
Even though it's been years since our venture together, Pat has remained both a mentor and a friend. He always gives frank, honest advice -- not just what you "want" to hear. And he's not afraid to ask the tough questions.
“Pat was instrumental in helping me start and grow our company. He was the lead investor in our seed round and was hands on all the way through M&A negotiations. Being a former founder and CEO he understands what it takes to build a company from the start. His experience is invaluable when it comes to navigating through tough times all founders will face. Pat is also a great guy that cares about the people as much as the company. All these attributes make him the ideal investor and partner for any startup.
“Pat is an entrepreneur’s entrepreneur. He has great instincts, tells it how it is, and will always give you candid feedback. If you’re looking to scale your startup you will be hard pressed to find another investor willing to roll up the sleeves and help you grow more than Pat.
“Pat has been a pleasure to work with. Always supportive, responsive and helpful. What started as a purely professional relationship grown into a friendship over time. He gets technology, was a founder, has corporate experience in bigger organizations and is an active angel investors... not sure what more you could ask of someone :) totally looking forward keeping working together!
“In the summer of 2013, Ben Doherty and I launched Favor in Austin. The next summer we were introduced to Pat from a founder we're friends with from the startup community. Pat invested in our seed round and has actively been engaged for nearly 3 years now. Over that time, I’ve had a chance to see how Pat thinks and operates.
Pat’s big on strategy. We didn’t have as much funding as competitors so we needed a plan to drive growth in a capital efficient manner. We spent a lot of time with Pat discussing how to use our network effect to penetrate markets. Together we came up with a strategy that worked.
I appreciate Pat's direct communication because it allows you to know what he thinks about a topic without any bs. Pat’s vocal, like a canary in the coal mine. He’ll share articles of industry happenings, send screenshots of product ideas when you have an update, he’ll give you the hard truth when you call him when shit’s hitting the fan.
Being an entrepreneur is hard. Really hard. There are so many decisions that can kill the company. Selection of cities to launch, org structure, product roadmap, fundraising. You get the picture. Partnering with an operator who’s been in the trenches before is not only refreshing, it gives you a founder-friendly ally you can count on.
I’m a huge fan of Pat and what he can bring to a company outside of purely capital. He’s the type of person you want on your side, fighting the good fight. As a lifelong entrepreneur, I’m sure I’ll start more companies. Pat will be on the short list for the friends and family rounds :)
“Pat is a true angel investor, in every sense of the word. He believed in us when no one else did and took a chance on our crazy startup ideas (twice!) when the odds seemed entirely stacked against our success. Pat has killer instincts, and he isn't afraid to take risks. He is incredibly supportive, and also incredibly humble. We have been so fortunate to have Pat as an investor, mentor and friend for the greater part of our entrepreneurial journey, and his support has been critical to our success. We could not recommend Pat more highly!
“Pat has invested in both of my companies now. If there is a third or fourth I'm going to get him on our team for those too! Pat is a straight shooter that really cares about you. It's rare to find an investor who cares about your success as an entrepreneur more than he cares about the success of the business you're running.
Pat's brutal honesty and candid feedback is something every entrepreneur needs and should want to hear. Pat's deep operating experience is obvious. He's the guy you to want to call when things really get tough. You can trust him to give you a perspective that only comes from years of experience and seeing lots of things go wrong. He sees around corners and knows all of the shit that you don't even know will go wrong, all while staying optimistic & encouraging through it all.
If you're consider Pat as an investor, trust me, take his money! He's so much more than just a guy who writes checks.
“OwnLocal has raised money from about 30+ investors, and of all of them, Pat has consistently been one of the most involved.
Being a real operator, but also someone who has built a company from the bottom, Pat has been a tremendous help in navigating some of our hardest decisions.
In many ways, Pat Matthews is the closest thing to a real mentor that I've ever had, and anyone who takes money from him will benefit in more ways than I could articulate in words.
