Launched the first full self-service Facebook retargeting solution for SMBs. I scaled it to $20m in sales in 18 months and sold it to Marin Software after Facebook announced...more they were going to go direct to advertisers and weaken position of partners. We raised $1.1m and sold for $25.5m. The core product was built by 3 people in an apartment in Mountain View in 2012. When we sold we had a team of 14: one sales rep, 3 support reps, one BD person, myself, co-founder and an eng team of 7.
NowSpots was the first product I took to market after raising seed funding from the Knight Foundation in 2010. It was a SaaS tool for creating HTML5 ads that pulled in live...more content from advertisers social media feeds. Basically it was a product that had an inkling of "native advertising" as it would later exist, but that missed the boat. I signed 5 deals with major publishers like Tribune and Hearst, but selling to publishers was clearly a bad biz model so we pivoted to Perfect Audience.
I read applications, visited high schools and talked to students and parents about applying to Princeton. It was at times a very intense, interesting job with great perks...more (visiting high schools for weeks was a lot of fun) and at other times a boring job (when you're staring at a pile of middling applications that need to be reviewed over the weekend).
I interned at Slate for 4 months in 2007, working for David Plotz and John Dickerson. I had ample opportunities to write for the magazine and enjoyed seeing the inner workings...more of a major online publications.
Brad was deeply supportive of Starcity when many others were not. His approach is hand-on to the extent you need it, and we certainly did early on. I have only positive things to say about Brad's involvement.
CEO & co-founder of Starcity, YC Summer 2016, YC Growth 2019. Starcity is a global, tech-enabled, urban living brand serving renters in expensive cities.
Brad helped us understand a lot of the subtleties of press and is one of the main reasons why we've been so successful in working with journalists. He's also introduced us to other investors and provided lots of valuable feedback.
CEO & Co-founder @starsky-robotics; a @y-combinator Company
Let me make this simple: if you have a chance to get Brad involved with your company, you should do it.
As an angel investor, he was refreshingly focused on our vision & traction, and not at all concerned with social proof. I love that. He also moved very quickly on his decision to invest.
Since investing in Crayon, Brad has been hands off when we need him to be (after all, we've got a company to build!) but very involved at various points in our growth when we've asked him to roll up his sleeves and help. He's insightful, driven and pragmatic. He's supportive but tough. In a word, he's awesome.
Thanks Brad... Crayon and I are forever in your debt!
I co-led an AngelList syndicate with Brad, and it was an exceptional experience, every step of the way. Brad is wonderful to work with - thoughtful, decisive, and helpful to the founders he supports. I hope to work on another deal with him soon!
