We are a collection of engineers and scientists from Oxford, MIT and DeepMind, on a mission to grow safer, healthier food by deploying fully autonomous indoor farms outside every city on earth.

Our team includes a professor of control engineering, a research scientist who helped reduce the cooling bill of a Google data centre by 40%, and a farmer who started as a vegetable picker 40 years ago and now runs one of the most advanced indoor farming operations in the world.

We are backed by world-leading deep technology VC funds, including Founders Fund, who have backed companies such as SpaceX, Palantir and Square from the very start. We are well capitalised for the future having raised one of the largest seed rounds ever in Europe.

YOUR ROLE

As a control system architect at Optimal you will take full ownership of the design, development and deployment of key parts of our autonomous greenhouse control system.

You will work with a multidisciplinary team across software engineering, control and reinforcement learning to automate growing within our large-scale, $50m pilot facilities, and then into greenhouses around the world.

This role is aimed at a senior engineer with recent architecting experience who has the ambition to become a technical lead within the next year.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

- Own the overall design of our autonomous greenhouse control system, working closely with our software engineering, control and reinforcement learning engineers.
- Design, develop and deploy high quality software, enabling us to rapidly run experiments, test ideas and iterate algorithmic approaches in simulation environments and within our large-scale, $50m indoor farms.
- Ensure a high standard of software quality across the team by reviewing designs and code, and providing feedback and mentorship.
- Recruit world-class software engineers.

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

- 5+ years programming experience in a compiled language e.g., C or C++.
- Experience working with industry standard software for rapid prototyping of control systems e.g., Simulink Real-Time, LabView, Modelica, Matlab.
- A high-level understanding of modern control: modelling and simulating dynamical systems, controller design and implementation, optimisation.
- Experience of working with control systems/instrumentation standards used in industry such as PLC, SCADA, DCS
- Experience setting up software-in-the-loop and hardware-in-the-loop testing environments for safe, rapid deployment.

Extra credit:
Broad knowledge of relevant open source and commercial software for monitoring control systems.
