Nagare is working to solve fresh water scarcity and waterborne disease. We seek to increase fresh water supply by offering advanced membrane technology that pushes desalination over a critical tipping point, beyond which it is the lowest cost and most energy efficient source of new fresh water - and one which is available in unlimited supply. We seek to ensure the availability of safe and wholesome drinking water by creating technologies that ensure that the water we drink is free of disease and contamination, and supports optimum health. Nagare has developed a practical and cost-effective method for making high performance carbon nanotube membranes at commercial scale. Carbon nanotube membrane technology has been demonstrated in numerous academic studies, but has so far only been possible using small-scale, expensive fabrication techniques similar to those used for silicon lithography. Nagare has adapted this technology to membrane fabrication methods currently used to make desalination and water purification membranes at global scale, using common materials and proven manufacturing techniques. These membranes will enable significant reductions in the cost of seawater and agricultural groundwater desalination and wastewater reuse, pushing desalination past the cost/efficiency tipping point for new fresh water supply. The membranes also allow for new applications that have not previously been possible - the use of a handheld filter that removes all known contaminants, without the need for filter replacement.

Who we are
As co-founder of Oasys Water and inventor of its forward osmosis (FO) desalination technology, Nagare's founder, Rob McGinnis, reduced the energy and cost of desalinating high salinity waters, including frac-flowback and power plant wastewater, by over 50%. As part of this effort, Rob also co-invented the most advanced membrane for FO and pressure retarded osmosis (PRO) currently available at commercial scale.
Why we're doing this
We think we can change the economic equation around water, making desalination (both seawater and wastewater reuse) the lowest-cost and most efficient source of new fresh water supply. Water quality and supply is closely linked to energy, food, manufacturing, industry, and human and ecosystem health. We believe that lowering the cost of desalination will unlock tremendous human and economic potential and spark the beginning of a new era of fresh water abundance.
