Continuing her affiliation with VCU in volunteer capacities, Mary Niederlehner maintained a position as Laboratory Research Assistant with the VCU Biopsychology Department. Her role involved experimental research on the effects of atypical antipsychotic drugs.
Assisting the lab manager, she undertook data entry and analysis, and handled animals and performed injections as required.
Ms. Niederlehner’s laboratory work informed a student presentation she made shortly prior to graduation at the Virginia Academy of Science Undergraduate Research Symposium. Her extracurricular activities while at VCU also included membership in the Psi Chi National Psychology Honor Society, which she served as Treasurer.
As a high school student, Mary Niederlehner excelled in Spanish and she continued her language studies into college at The University of South Carolina in Columbia. An honors student while at the institution from 2007 to 2008, she was selected to participate in the PACES pre-medicine program. This supervised assignment involved office support at a dermatologist’s office offering checkups, lab work, and surgical care.
