Education and engagement in policing in San Francisco
Founder, Project Manager, now Co-Lead of the Observer Corps, Google Drive, Whatsapp, Google Groups · Right now, the San Francisco police department has… · More hundreds of reform initiatives. Now is a powerful time to get involved!
San Franciscans deserve clear explanations of what these reforms will do. How are they prioritized? Who is responsible? Why are we making these changes? How will this impact daily life? What about the lives of neighbors? How do we know if a reform is working? What if some people benefit, but other people suffer? Engagement in policing practices of ALL San Franciscans will change our city, is being used as a model throughout California, and has the potential to influence the League's work nationally.
After persuading the LWVSF board to make policing an issue for education, we launched this project area. First, recruiting volunteers to found, develop, and manage three main projects: policing FAQs, observation of policing-related meetings, and interviews with policing-related government officials. Based on early success, the team is now focused on FAQs and the Observer Corps. More information: https://www.lwvsf.org/police/
What I Do
We need everyone active in civic life so that our world is vibrant & just. Collaboration, consensus building, and trust are essential. We don't have to all agree, but exclusion, ignorance and apathy are dangerous.
Elected president of the League of Women Voters of CA 2011-14 and Communications Director 2008-2011. Achieved critical legislative and ballot victories; secured grants, contracts and partnerships; decreased government dysfunction; increased transparency and accountability; redistricting; civic participation; justice.
I am accepting remote, part-time clients doing good.
I am also leading a grassroots police accountability & transparency project in San Francisco (with state-wide and national alliances). I am recruiting volunteers; non-profit, for-profit and government partners; and seeking press relationships.
