Keen Home builds proactive hardware devices that aim to enhance the core functions of the home, so your home can start to take care of you. For our first product, we are focusing on a home's heating and cooling system.
The average U.S. household spends 50% of its energy bill on heating or cooling, or about $2,000 per year. This same household has an average of two to four rooms that are overheated or overcooled at various times throughout the day. Up until now, there has been innovation in thermostat technology, but we believe that is only part of the solution. To solve this problem, we have developed the Keen Home Smart Vent.
Our patented Smart Vent is a wirelessly networked air vent that intelligently opens and closes to redirect airflow throughout the home. This not only increases comfort on a room-by-room level, but also reduces the run time of heating and cooling systems by up to 30 percent, resulting in a potential payback period of less than one year. We have also introduced smart air purification to our product lineup.
Keen Home has also been approached by several parties showing strong demand for applications of our Smart Vent technology in light commercial/office spaces and hotels where conventional commercial damping solutions are not cost effective.
Starting with the Smart Vent, Keen Home will continue to develop devices that bring proactive intelligence to the core systems of a home. These products will leverage new technologies and a sharp design aesthetic to ‘wake up’ traditionally sleepy devices.
Keen’s culture centers on innovation, which influences business decisions, overall strategy, and product roadmap. We believe in strong product design and place a high value on aesthetic sensibility. Our team comprises out of the box thinkers and operators and expects all team members to express and defend their opinions. Our work environment is laid back, cross-functional, and collaborative.
We've shipped over 24,000 units to retail channels and over 3,000 direct customers. Lowe's is our retail partner and is responsible for purchasing 15,000 units.
We currently distribute our product through our website, keenhome.io, Amazon, com, Newegg.com, and at 680 Lowe's retail stores.
By May, we will distribute to HVAC installers, utilities, and homebuilders through an affiliate's sales force which will greatly expand our reach.
The Smart Vent utilizes low power mesh networking to link the vents to each other and to the internet. Position sensors, temperature sensors, pressure sensors, and location targeting enable Keen Home to learn users' habits and offer suggestions to customers. Connected Home platforms and partner products (like smart thermostats) can use Keen Home's API to maximize the user experience.

Lumoid makes it easy to rent, try and buy consumer electronics, starting with photography gear.
1. We use excess inventory from used electronics stores to fulfill demand. We also work directly with brands to send us equipment to ship to customers, in exchange for data (see (3) below). This keeps us inventory light.
2. We recommend + ship the gear (think cameras, lenses, GoPros etc.) for between $5/day to $25/day.
3. We collect a TON of data on what people try and then buy (or return). Brands love the data we give them around usage pattern, purchase behavior. We also use the data to recommend better products to our customers.
Early traction data is very good - particularly, we're seeing very high repeat rental/purchase behavior for a low acquisition cost.
Photography is where we're starting, and we're beginning to expand to other areas. What can we expand to? Look at thewirecutter.com - essentially, any item that is medium to high value, that is shippable, can be a part of Lumoid.
We're at the forefront of the new field of crowdsourced sensor networks and looking for smart, passionate and determined people to help us achieve our mission of becoming the global authority on wireless networks. This innovative technology and big data will allow you to work on a set of unique and complex technical challenges where the solution usually can't be looked up in a textbook. Our technology also placed us in Guardian's list of the hottest 20 tech startups in East London in 2012 and helped us snatch the prestigious UKTI (UK Trade and Investment) Smart UK Award in 2013.

Since reaching critical mass of data we launched our first commercial product, OpenSignal Insights, in Q4 2013. In 4 months we managed to sign deals with clients such as McKinsey, Opera, Telefonica and ChinaMobile. Our global dataset has enabled us to close deals in 4 different continents and establishing our consumer brand through public reports and partnerships with press outlets, consumer groups and retailers attracts deal flow and allows us to close sales quickly. Three of our deals to date have been closed in under 7 days, far shorter than traditional enterprise sales cycles.
The OpenSignal App has been downloaded more than 11 million times worldwide. This is about 20x in traction compared to our closest competitors and provides us with billions of data points on wireless networks in over 200 countries globally. We've always focussed on providing app users with a clear incentive which has enabled us to achieve 100K 5 star reviews and a strong position in the app stores. We also use the same dataset to put out public reports on the wireless market such as our android fragmentation visualisation which is viewed by 10 million+ people driving further download traction.
Building a sensor network on consumer devices requires both an appreciation of technical challenges and a talent for building compelling consumer products. An effective network will: take and upload readings efficiently and in a convenient format, process the data, feed the data back to the app to improve it. At OpenSignal we have invested significantly in developing each of these links: developing a powerful methodology for taking readings; an array of tools and processes for extracting value from data; and a philosophy of positive feedback whereby app users become contributors to the improvement of the app.
As an example of how we are at the forefront of this field, OpenSignal's research into how sensors can be repurposed - for example how battery sensors can be used to monitor external ambient temperature - has been been referenced by Journals such as Nature.
Orion makes beautiful wearable devices that unite groups and allow people to easily collaborate in real time.
Orion is a team of artists, engineers, and technologists based in San Francisco, California, dedicated to connecting people through seamless communication. We believe you should be able to communicate with people who aren’t by your side, without yelling or getting distracted by your phone, giving you more time and ability to focus on the moments and people around you.
We’re inspired by the tools first responders use to work together when the stakes are high and coordination is essential, but our mission is to make something you’ll want to use every day. An open line of communication doesn’t just help get the job done in critical moments. We believe that anything you want to do can be done better by staying connected to the people who matter most.
