Today Derek works as an entrepreneur creating, advising and investing in startups in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Derek is from Boston and graduated from Carnegie Mellon in 2005 with a dual major in Computer Science and Human and Computer Interactions.
Derek is an entrepreneur and technical leader with over fourteen years of experience in software engineering. He is the founder of Google Apps for Businesses and served as its technical lead for nearly six years. He launched the project from scratch and helped grow the team to over one hundred engineers serving over 40 million customers utilizing and developing some of the world’s largest scalable systems shaping what is now referred to as “the cloud". He has also worked on projects that fly above the clouds having led the software engineering team at Planet Labs, a startup developing image taking satellites.
Fun fact about Derek:
In 2011, Derek took a break from tech to produce the horror film, The Evil Inside. He has also invested in a tv series and two restaurants.
Derek was an invaluable informal advisor to the company for months before formally taking the role. His expertise across literally every aspect of startupping and scaling is just awesome. Can't say enough.
