About us:
unspun is a robotics and digital apparel company building custom jeans for each consumer, on demand. Our mission is to reduce global carbon emissions by 1% through automated, localized, and intentional manufacturing. Our revolutionary technology is currently being realized through our award-winning brand unspun (one of TIME's Best Inventions of 2019), a software B2B platform powering digital customization for multiple large apparel labels, and a National Science Foundation-backed hardware team working on the future of additive and automated apparel production. We’re a fast-moving company powered by Fifty Years, Prelude Ventures, SOSV, and the H&M Foundation. We also happen to make the best fitting jeans on the planet.

We are looking for an early-career Integration Engineer (or similar) to help us assemble, run, and troubleshoot a completely new method of manufacturing. In this role, you will serve as the main engineer for all interaction and operation of our robotic manufacturing process. You will read mechanical and electrical drawings and work with other engineers in assembling mechatronics systems and run integration tests. We’re looking for someone with prior exposure to robotics and automation equipment, and someone who is excited about the risks and rewards of joining an early-stage startup.

What we’re building:
We’ve developed a proprietary and patent-pending technology at the crossroads of 3D printing and automated textile manufacturing. By skipping the flat 2D fabric stage, we can additively build custom apparel products from the ground up- straight from yarn to final product. If additive manufacturing, industrial automation, and synchronized systems of hundreds of actuators gets you excited, we’d love to talk!

About you:
You enjoy building finely tuned machines and are proud to make them work smoothly. You have strong interpersonal skills and can communicate issues with designs that may crop up during a prototype build. You can read electrical schematics and mechanical schematics well enough to understand the design, spot errors, and find solutions to them. You likely have a few projects in your portfolio where you’ve designed and built an electromechanical system. You enjoy thinking three-dimensionally and problems with no obvious answer excite you. You’re fascinated with the intersection of art and engineering, and continuous learning is a fundamental part of who you are. You are energized by working on hard problems within an evolving R&D environment.

You will:
•Act as the main engineer responsible for all operation, testing, and upgrade of our machine.
•Work cross-functionally with the mechanical, automation, and software teams.
•Assemble, install, and maintain custom mechanical assemblies, wiring harnesses, and electrical cabling within our machines.
•Run and lead tests to gather data for process validation.
•Integrate and tune control systems for custom hardware systems.
•Write and maintain useful documentation.

Requirements:
•BS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science/Engineering, Controls Engineering, or related fields with 0 to 2 years experience (or 2+ years of relevant experience without a degree).
•Able to read and understand PCBA layouts and schematics.
•Some prior experience with Python.
•Experience soldering, crimping, and otherwise assembling cabling for signal and power.
•Experience running (and potentially maintaining) automation machinery.
•Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
•Willing to do hands-on experiments and testing in our SoMa hardware facility.

Nice to haves:
•Experience in circuit design.
•Experience in manual or CNC machining.
•Experience in additive technologies such as 3D printing.
•Experience with industrial electrical systems or controls hardware.
•Experience developing electrical enclosures.
•PCBA development experience from schematic to production.
•Experience with industrial electrical systems or controls hardware.
•Experience with C and C++ on Linux as well as in Embedded Systems.
•PLC programming experience.
•Experience with ROS.
•Experience with microcontroller assembly (ARM).
•Knowledge of Real-time Operating Systems on microcontrollers (RTOS).
•Knowledge of USB/Ethernet development on microcontrollers and in a Linux environment .

Our philosophy:
We won’t roll our eyes if your socks don’t match. We get it. But then, if you spend those extra few minutes in the morning matching your socks and shirt, we get that too. Our workspaces are sometimes spotless and sometimes chaotic, and we celebrate messy exploration. We work through complex problems but generate simple and elegant solutions. We strive to look at things differently, and never do anything solely because “that’s the way it’s always been done.”

We’re a team of designers and engineers, industry-veterans and serial entrepreneurs, artists and developers. We’re aspiring chess masters and climbers, capoeiristas and bakers, snowboarders and photographers. Originally spun out of Stanford and the University of Colorado, we now call downtown San Francisco home, with strong ties to Hong Kong. We are looking for teammates who share our desire to work on ambitious problems and leave the world better than we found it.

unspun is an equal opportunity employer, and we are committed to being a diverse team that reflects a broad range of background, thought, and experience. We do not discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, national origin, status as an individual with a disability, status as protected veteran, or any other legally protected characteristics. Women, minorities, and people from underrepresented backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.
