About Us:
unspun is a digital apparel and robotics company building custom jeans for each consumer, on demand. Our mission is to reduce global carbon emissions by 1% through automated, localized, and intentional manufacturing. Our revolutionary technology is currently being realized through our own consumer denim brand, a software platform powering digital customization for multiple large apparel labels, and a National Science Foundation-backed hardware team working on the future of additive and automated apparel production. We’re a fast-moving company powered by Fifty.vc, Prelude Ventures, SOSV, and the H&M Foundation. We also happen to make the best fitting jeans on the planet.

We are looking for a passionate textile engineer, scientist, and/or designer to join our team for a coop internship starting this summer and if desired continuing through the end of the year (term negotiable). You will be an integral part of our hardware development team helping to create and evaluate our evolving prototype loom. In this role, you will help explore and test the limitations of our prototype loom and help design and develop further innovation.

We’re looking for someone with an interest in novel loom designs, woven structures, and fibers and yarns, who is excited about joining a seed-funded startup to help revolutionize clothing manufacturing.

What We’re Building:
We’ve developed a proprietary and patent-pending technology at the crossroads of additive and automated textile manufacturing. By skipping the flat 2D fabric stage, we can build custom apparel products from the ground up; straight from individual yarns to a final product. If textile innovation, reducing the global impact of clothing manufacturing and working on the cutting edge of weaving technology gets you excited, we’d love to talk!

About You:
You would enjoy working on fast-paced and early-stage robotic technology development program. You thrive on the lack of clear answers at the outset of ambitious projects, and look forward to finding clarity and articulating it to others. You are energized by working on hard problems within an evolving R&D environment.

You Will:
• Learn to set up, operate and modify a novel prototype loom in active development
• Run experiments to assess loom output and capabilities
• Conduct detailed analysis of weave quality and help brainstorm ways to iterate and improve
• Help help source new types of yarn, work with vendors and qualify materials in testing
• Help identify limitations of technical approaches and help brainstorm new approaches

• Enrolled in or completed degree in Textile Engineering, Textiles or related degree
• Have knowledge of looms and weaving, mechanics of textiles, woven structures creation and analysis, yarn structure and processing, and yarn material selection and sourcing
• Willing to work at our R&D facility in San Francisco with possible trips to our facility in Guangzhou, China
• Hands-on experience operating or working with looms, machinery and mechanical devices
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Good attention to detail

Bonus Points:
• Knowledge of and experience with analytical techniques of textile evaluation
• Experience running hands-on experiments and testing techniques
• Understanding of basic statistics in context of experiments
• Experience working on fast-paced early stage R&D projects
• Experience with solidworks or other 3D modelling programs
• Basic experience with computer programming

Our Philosophy:
We won’t roll our eyes if your socks don’t match. We get it. But then, if you spend those extra few minutes in the morning matching your socks and shirt, we get that too. Our workspaces are sometimes spotless and sometimes chaotic, and we celebrate messy exploration. We work through complex problems but generate simple and elegant solutions. We strive to look at things differently, and never do anything solely because “that’s the way it’s always been done.”

We’re a team of designers and engineers, industry-veterans and serial entrepreneurs, artists and developers. We’re aspiring chess masters, and climbers, capoeiristas and bakers, snowboarders and photographers. Originally spun out of Stanford and the University of Colorado, we now call downtown San Francisco home, with strong ties to Hong Kong. We are looking for teammates who share our desire to work on ambitious problems and leave the world better than we found it.

unspun is an equal opportunity employer, and we are committed to being a diverse team that reflects a broad range of background, thought, and experience. We do not discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, national origin, status as an individual with a disability, status as protected veteran, or any other legally protected characteristics. Women, minorities, and people from underrepresented backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.
