About Us:
unspun is a digital apparel and robotics company building custom jeans for each consumer, on demand. Our mission is to reduce global carbon emissions by 1% through automated, localized, and intentional manufacturing. Our revolutionary technology is currently being realized through our own consumer denim brand, a software platform powering digital customization for multiple large apparel labels, and a National Science Foundation-backed hardware team working on the future of additive and automated apparel production. We’re a fast-moving company powered by Fifty.vc, Prelude Ventures, SOSV, and the H&M Foundation. We also happen to make the best fitting jeans on the planet.

We are looking for a passionate Mechanical Engineer Intern to join our team for a co-op position between now and August 2020 (term negotiable). In this role, you will support and run analyses and testing of a complex electro-mechanical weaving system and aid in mechanical design changes. We’re looking for someone with experience and interest in mechanical and robotic systems and someone who is excited about joining a seed-funded startup.

What We’re Building:
We’ve developed a proprietary and patent-pending technology at the crossroads of additive and automated textile manufacturing. By skipping the flat 2D fabric stage, we can build custom apparel products from the ground up; straight from individual yarns to a final product. If 3D printing, industrial automation, and synchronized systems of thousands of actuators gets you excited, we’d love to talk!

About You:
You enjoy working on fast-paced and early-stage mechanical design. You have experience in working with and evaluating mechanical systems. You thrive on the lack of clear answers at the outset of ambitious projects, and look forward to finding clarity and articulating it to others. You are energized by working on hard problems within an evolving R&D environment.

You Will:
• Be trained to operate and run a prototype advanced textile manufacturing machine
• Be responsible for managing, setting up, and adjusting looms for prototype and testing trials
• Run experiments to assess loom output and capability
• Conduct detailed analysis of output quality. Record and communicate results
• Be responsible for identifying limitations of approaches and suggesting new paths
• Use measurement equipment to characterize machine state and hypothesize root cause of any issues
• Work cross-functionally with other engineers to run experiments and assess results
• Model mechanical parts in CAD
• Conduct mechanical design on small mechanical assemblies
• Write and maintain documentation for internal communication and record keeping

You Have:
• BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering, Textile Engineering, or related fields with 0-2 years of experience
• CAD experience (Solidworks preferred)
• Experience running hands-on experiments and testing techniques.
• Hands-on experience working with machinery or mechanical devices
• Experience operating experimental measurement equipment and instrumentation
• Experience using basic physics and mechanical engineering analysis for part and system design
• Experience with mechatronics, moving parts, or sensors
• Experience in the areas of design for manufacturing (e.g. sheet metal, injection molding, die casting, extrusions)
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Good attention to detail

Bonus Points:
• Experience and/or interest in working with textiles, weaving, and yarns
• Understanding of basic statistics in context of experiments
• Experience in designing parts for manufacturing on a mill, lathe, 3D printers, sheet metal fabrication and other processes
• Experiencing operating and setting up machinery
• Experience working on fast-paced early stage R&D projects
• Experience working with vendors

Our Philosophy:
We won’t roll our eyes if your socks don’t match. We get it. But then, if you spend those extra few minutes in the morning matching your socks and shirt, we get that too. Our workspaces are sometimes spotless and sometimes chaotic, and we celebrate messy exploration. We work through complex problems but generate simple and elegant solutions. We strive to look at things differently, and never do anything solely because “that’s the way it’s always been done.”

We’re a team of designers and engineers, industry-veterans and serial entrepreneurs, artists and developers. We’re aspiring chess masters, and climbers, capoeiristas and bakers, snowboarders and photographers. Originally spun out of Stanford and the University of Colorado, we now call downtown San Francisco home, with strong ties to Hong Kong. We are looking for teammates who share our desire to work on ambitious problems and leave the world better than we found it.

unspun is an equal opportunity employer, and we are committed to being a diverse team that reflects a broad range of background, thought, and experience. We do not discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, national origin, status as an individual with a disability, status as protected veteran, or any other legally protected characteristics. Women, minorities, and people from underrepresented backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.
