Who We Are

The Outdoor Journal is an international outdoor sports and adventure travel magazine, with true stories from adventurers and travelers all over the world. It is a website, with news from unreported regions and stories not told. It is videos, of adventures, and expeditions to places that still have room for first descents and ascents. It is events, bringing together communities of enthusiasts and believers. It is soon a reviews platform, enabling travelers to make better decisions about their next adventure.

Our mission is to provide readers, without compromise, the highest quality multimedia content from the world of outdoor sports, fitness, alternative pursuits, travel, nature and wilderness.

A company and team that is growing and currently seeking a highly creative and detail-oriented Editor to report both to the CMO and Editor-in-Chief.

Duties and Responsibilities

- Responsible for the day-to-day running and strategy of the different forms of editorial content, ensuring consistency and efficacy of the magazine in all its channels – online (video, images, blog, social media and more), on tablet and in print.
- Focus on content within highly visible brand projects
- Plan the contents of the publications according to the publication's style, editorial policy, and publishing requirements.
- Manage the flat plan for all TOJ magazine editions. Oversee publication production, ensuring budget, deadlines and timeline requirements for the magazine from start to finish.
- Responsible for editorial quality control for the print magazine, the website, videos and new media, as well as other company-related content.

- Must be highly organized, systematic, proactive, flexible, dedicated, and able to work well alone or in group situations on multiple simultaneous projects.
- Must be able to drive projects, manage freelancers, meet deadlines, and participate in all facets of publishing process.
- Intellectually engaged in content and outdoor adventure sport culture; sensitive and thoughtful about text, images, and design/materials; independent, creative, pragmatic, hands-on, and detail-oriented.
- Ensure that all content comply with ethical codes of practice and legal guidelines
- The ability to build a strong team, and resolve conflicts and handle grievances within the team.
- Understands the chaos of startups all that comes with it (multiple time zones, cultures and nationalities). Meaning, can maintain his/her sangfroid in the face of unprecedented levels of idiocy from all quarters.
- Proficient or comfortable with technology and learning required software and tools including but not limited to Adobe Indesign; Google Drive, Asana, Slack and others
- Understands the desperate reality of media today, and compromises that are made with regards to advertising and cooperation with brands (when necessary), yet is able to hold the line when needed. Idealism is good. Survival is better.


Basic Requirements

Must have at least 6-12 years of progressive experience (six years full-time or twelve years freelancing) in an editorial capacity with lifestyle magazines, preferably in the outdoor sport space.
