Job Description

Terabase’s Industrial Engineer - Factory is a key contributor of the product development team who will work closely with the EVP, Technology & Operations, the Mechanical Engineering Director, and our R&D team to develop technology that will streamline how utility-scale solar power plants are designed and constructed. The position will support Terabase’s mission to lower the cost of solar electricity to $0.01/kWh by 2025. The position will be responsible for developing procesess, specification, layout, design and factory optimization used in manufacturing assemblies that include solar equipment.

The position will work closely with product managers and global business development leads to translate customer needs into product requirements and will work with the team to maintain a cross-functional strategy for the product roadmap.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and evaluate integrated systems for managing industrial production processes, including human work factors, quality control, inventory control, logistics and material flow, cost analysis, and production coordination
  • Plan and establish sequence of operations to fabricate and assemble parts or products and to promote efficient utilization
  • Estimate production costs, cost saving methods, and the effects of product design changes on capital expenditures for management review
  • Design layout of equipment, materials, and workspace to optimize production cost and speed
  • Plan and establish sequence of operations to fabricate and assemble parts or products and to promote efficient utilization
  • Study operations sequence, material flow, functional statements, organization charts, and project information to determine worker functions and responsibilities
  • Recommend methods for improving utilization of personnel, material, and utilities
  • Apply statistical methods and perform mathematical calculations to determine manufacturing processes, staff requirements, and production standards
  • Recommend capital equipment purchases of factory and automation equipment
  • Coordinate and implement quality control objectives, activities, or procedures to resolve production problems, maximize product reliability, or minimize costs
  • Implement methods and procedures for disposition of discrepant material and defective or damaged parts, and assess cost and responsibility
  • Support laboratory and/or field testing, include alpha and beta test planning, instrumentation requirements, installation, and data collection processes
  • Assist with product life cycle reviews (technical and stage gate), and mediate trade-offs in order to ensure design solutions are in sync with product attribute targets
  • Occasional travel and support of outdoor field testing or to utility powerplant projects
  • Light assembly, manufacturing and machining for prototyping and evaluation

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in industrial engineering or related field, and 5+ years of work experience preferably in factory design & operations
  • Ability to work independently and with a team to develop innovative solutions to technical problems
  • Able to work remotely and as part of a distributed team
  • Light assembly, manufacturing and machining for prototyping and evaluation
  • Exceptional people and communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • 7 or more years of related work experience
  • Solar utility power plant experience, particularly related to single-axis trackers, and methods to assemble and install them
  • Experience with large equipment used in construction, logistics, minging, logging, farming etc.
  • Experience with New Product Introduction (NPI)
  • Experience with designing lean factories, Kanban, and factory simulation (e.g. Flexsim)
  • 3D mechanical design experience with SolidWorks
  • 3D printing

Work Locations
Normally we would be working together in our Berkeley head office, but like many companies most of our employees work remotely for the time being. We have a field testing venue in Davis, CA so if you are based in the San Francisco Bay Area, Davis, Sacramento or the surrounding areas this position may be an ideal fit for you, however we will consider other locations in the USA.
