About the role

As an engineering manager, you’ll focus on developing our engineers, and enabling them to grow as both developers and people. A strong focus on personal growth is one of our core values, so you'll be working with a motivated (and already experienced) team that really cares about improving. You’ll also own one or more product areas, scale yourself by building a great team around you, and likely make architectural decisions that will last us for years.

We’re planning to double in size for each of the next two years. Fast-growing companies are often constrained by their ability to find or cultivate great managers. Your responsibility will be to act as one of those leaders yourself, and help train others to take on increasingly significant responsibilities.

Responsibilities
- Help less experienced engineers level up by teaching best practices, giving constructive feedback, doing detailed code and architecture reviews, and answering questions.
- Develop the careers of your reports with regular, well-structured 1:1s.
- Participate in implementation. You’ll architect, write, review, and debug code.
- Interface between product managers, designers, other engineering teams, and both internal and external customers.
- Recruit more great engineers and engineering leaders.
- Do whatever is necessary to help your team and the company succeed.

Requirements
- 4+ years of software engineering experience.
- Experience managing and mentoring other engineers.
- You have the rare mix of intelligence, soft skills, integrity and technical skills that allow you to rapidly earn the trust of a technically astute team.
- You understand both the value of shipping quickly and of software craftsmanship, and have the judgment to know when to apply each. You’re capable, focused, and productive.
- You understand that high-performing teams should be able to take risks and make mistakes without feeling insecure or embarrassed, but that it is critical to deliver both positive and negative feedback frequently. You make colleagues feel trusted and supported.
- You deeply resonate with many of our values.

Stack
- Python 3 (django, scikit-learn, pytorch)
- Typescript (react)
- Postgresql
- AWS

Personal growth at Sourceress

We are happy to pay for coaching for this role. In the past, we’ve paid for executive coaching from Torch.io, engineering leadership courses from the Bradfield School of Computer Science, weekend workshops at the Center for Applied Rationality, and conference tickets. We strongly value personal growth, and want to help you grow into the person and leader that you aspire to be.

Accordingly, we’re open to talking to high-trajectory candidates without a huge amount of prior management experience (especially since we have lots of other software engineer roles if you decide that managing actually isn't for you.)
