Second Order Effects (SOE) is a California-based engineering firm specializing in custom electronics and end-to-end electronic system design. We develop cross-disciplined solutions and products to help solve some of the world’s most difficult problems by optimizing solutions beyond the first order.

SOE tackles a wide range of projects in the aerospace, automotive, industrial, and commercial sectors. We design and build flight control systems, wireless communication devices, power electronics, analog sensor interfaces, mixed signal circuits, motor drivers, system controllers, video cameras, embedded computers, and optical and RF amplifiers, sensors, and antennas. Our designs have gone into rocket engines, satellites, self-driving cars, automated systems, and household/retail consumer electronics.

Second Order Effects seeks a self-starting Engineering Technician / Assembly Specialist with a passion for high-complexity electronics, robotics,space systems, and consumer electronics.An ideal candidate enjoys creative problem-solving working with a skilled team. SOE requires a technician who is not afraid of exposure to a wide variety of problems and tasks - each project is different and exciting.

The solution and execution of SOE projects often needs to be learned, invented, and executed on the spot, so the ideal candidate would have tenacious problem-solving skills and a passion for taking ownership through project execution. SOE technicians generally work in small teams for large goals and are not intimidated by tackling the biggest challenges.

Responsibilities:

• Assist engineers with testing, assembling, and debugging electro-mechanical systems
• Assemble, pre-program, solder, and test electrical components (e.g., PCBs and custom electrical hardware)
• Assemble and test wire/cable harnesses
• Demonstrate safe work practices and follow safety procedures
• Provide feedback on test plans and drawings

Required Skills and Experience:

• 2+ years engineering technician experience
• Possesses background knowledge in engineering or computer science
• Knowledge of electronic test equipment
• Excellent soldering skills with surface mount components
• Read and understand technical drawings
• Good verbal and written communication skills
• Understand and interpret engineering terminology
• Familiarity with proper lab safety procedures

Preferred Experience:

• University Degree (Engineering, Physics, Math, related field)
• Knowledge of circuit boards, processors, chips, electronic equipment, and computer hardware and software, including applications and basic programming
• Experience with automated test systems or qualification testing for aerospace or automotive

Additional Requirements:

• Applicant must be willing to work 40 hours a week onsite in El Segundo, CA
• Applicant must be eligible to work on ITAR projects.

ITAR Requirements:

• To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations,including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) you must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S.,protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
