Second Order Effects (SOE) is a California-based engineering firm specializing in custom electronics and end-to-end electronic system design. We develop cross-disciplined solutions and products to help solve some of the world’s most difficult problems by optimizing solutions beyond the first order.

SOE tackles a wide range of projects in the aerospace, automotive, industrial, and commercial sectors. We design and build flight control systems, wireless communication devices, power electronics, analog sensor interfaces, mixed signal circuits, motor drivers, system controllers, video cameras, embedded computers, and optical and RF amplifiers, sensors, and antennas. Our designs have gone into rocket engines, satellites, self-driving cars, automated systems, and household/retail consumer electronics.

What we’re looking for:

Second Order Effects seeks a self-starting Electrical Engineer who enjoys full project ownership and design freedom. Our engineers start a project from initial customer concepts, design a system into a clear engagement, and see the design through to implementation.

SOE is looking for an engineer who is unafraid of exposure to a wide variety of problems and tasks. The solution and execution of SOE projects often needs to be learned, invented, and executed on the spot, so the ideal candidate would have tenacious problem-solving skills and a passion for taking ownership through project execution. SOE engineers generally work in small teams for large goals and are not intimidated by tackling the biggest challenges.

Responsibilities:

• Develop firmware in C for a range of microcontrollers in a variety of applications
• Digital design and HDL (in Verilog) for FPGAs in a variety of applications
• Design sensor and data acquisition systems: evaluate components and compare alternative solutions, determine interface requirements and electrical implementation details
• Bring up communication interfaces like SPI, I2C, CAN, and serial links, and write data protocols on top of them
• Assist with system architecture design for embedded projects
• Schematic capture for digital designs, ensure components are properly connected and configured
• Board bring-up, implement / debug JTAG and SWD interfaces
• Evaluate power consumption and thermal requirements of embedded systems
• Participate in design reviews of hardware and perform code reviews for software
• Write desktop software drivers and GUIs (in Python) to control and acquire data from embedded devices
• Debug and optimize vendor and client code of sub-optimal quality
• Scoping, coordinating. scheduling, and budgeting design work
• Contribute to improvements in Electronic System Design Processes
• Provide design, testing, and manufacturing technical support for existing projects

Basic Qualifications:

• University Degree (Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Math, related field)
• 1-5 years of industry experience
• Demonstrated lifelong passion for engineering and technology
• Experience in a team-based design and build project (Ex: Formula SAE, solar house, solar car, cube satellite)
• Strong C and/or C++ programming abilities
• Familiarity with Python and/or MATLAB for data parsing and signal analysis
• Understanding of computer architecture and digital design fundamentals
• Using Verilog or VHDL to implement digital logic in FPGAs
• Using standard communication protocols in an embedded context (CAN, USB, SPI, I2C, RS-232, Ethernet, etc)
• Familiar with Git and SVN for revision control
• Knowledge of analog, digital, or mix-signal design fundamentals. Working knowledge and understanding of circuit design with filters, operational amplifiers, integrated circuits, transistors, and digital to analog converters.
• Working knowledge of either audio, RF, electro-mechanical, or optical systems
• Ability to synthesize critical technical details into risks and actions items

Preferred Skills & Experience:

• Experience with a range of ARM Cortex-M devices, and with Lattice or Xilinx FPGAs
• Comfortable with Linux systems and desktop environment
• Schematic capture and/or PCB design in Altium Designer

Additional Requirements:

• Applicant must be willing to work 40 hours a week onsite in El Segundo, CA
• Applicant must be eligible to work on ITAR projects
