Second Order Effects (SOE) is a California-based engineering firm specializing in custom electronics and end-to-end electronic system design. We develop cross-disciplined solutions and products to help solve some of the world’s most difficult problems by optimizing solutions beyond the first order.

SOE tackles a wide range of projects in the aerospace, automotive, industrial, and commercial sectors. We design and build flight control systems, wireless communication devices, power electronics, analog sensor interfaces, mixed signal circuits, motor drivers, system controllers, video cameras, embedded computers, and optical and RF amplifiers, sensors, and antennas. Our designs have gone into rocket engines, satellites, self-driving cars, automated systems, and household/retail consumer electronics.

What we’re looking for:

Second Order Effects seeks a self-starting Electrical Engineer who enjoys full project ownership and design freedom. Our engineers work on a variety of projects, with ownership throughout multiple stages of the project and product life-cycles— from initial customer concepts, design, testing, and seeing designs through to prototyping, production, and implementation.

SOE is looking for an engineer who is unafraid of exposure to a wide variety of problems and tasks. The solution and execution of SOE projects often needs to be learned, invented, and executed on the spot, so the ideal candidate would have tenacious problem-solving skills and a passion for taking ownership through project execution. SOE engineers generally work in small teams for large goals and are not intimidated by tackling the biggest challenges.

Responsibilities:

• Lead design efforts for electronic systems, including architecture and implementation details
• Schematic capture and PCB layout
• Part selection, evaluate components and compare alternative solutions
• Interface definition, connector selection, and harness drawings
• Design high-current load drivers including motor and solenoid valve drivers
• Power supply design: switching regulators, isolated supplies, stability, noise, and characterization
• Circuit simulation
• Thermal analysis of designs and sizing of thermal management systems
• Design of sensor interfaces and analog front-ends for data acquisition systems
• Board bring-up and troubleshooting
• Write and execute test plans for device validation and performance characterization
• Participate in design reviews at all stages of project development
• Scoping, coordinating. scheduling, and budgeting design work
• Contribute to improvements in Electronic System Design Processes
• Provide design, testing, and manufacturing technical support for existing projects

Basic Qualifications:

• University Degree (Electrical Engineering, Physics, Math, related field)
• 1-5 years of industry experience
• Demonstrated lifelong passion for engineering and technology
• Experience in a team-based design and build project (Ex: Formula SAE, solar house, solar car, cube satellite)
• Analog small-signal circuit design: filters, op-amp circuits, signal conditioning
• Analog power electronics design: regulators, load drivers, supply filters, protection circuitry
• Schematic capture and PCB layout experience, preferably using Altium Designer
• Interfacing with PCB and assembly vendors to have designs fabricated
• Familiar with Git and SVN for revision control
• Working knowledge of embedded systems: microcontrollers, ADCs and DACs, common communication interfaces like UART, SPI and I2C.
• Working knowledge of either audio, RF, electromechanical, or optical systems
• Ability to synthesize critical technical details into risks and actions items

Preferred Skills & Experience:

• Large-format or high-density or high-layer-count PCB design experience
• Comfortable with Linux systems and desktop environment
• Familiarity with Python and/or MATLAB for data parsing and signal analysis
• Experience with automated test systems or qualification testing for aerospace or automotive

Additional Requirements:

• Applicant must be willing to work 40 hours a week onsite in El Segundo, CA
• Applicant must be eligible to work on ITAR projects.
