Mechanical Design Engineer - Brackets & Injection Moulding
This is what you’ll do: *· You will be responsible for the mechanical design of all brackets and several injection moulded parts within the Electrical Engineering group· Design a wide variety of injection molded parts; from subwoofer enclosures, speaker ‘waveguides’, ECU enclosures, wiring harness formers, carriers, and consumer electronics housings· This will include brackets to support wiring harness routing, as well as electrical component (such as ECU’s and sensors) mounting· Conduct CAE analysis on your designs to ensure the mass, strength, and cost is optimized· Design the brackets in such a way to optimize piece and tooling costs· Liaise with a number of injection-moulding and sheet metal suppliers, interrogate their quotes and ensure the costs represent good value to Rivian· Work closely with Electrical Integration Engineers, who are designing the vehicle wiring harnesses and integrating the electrical components into the vehicle package· Design parts taking into account mass manufacturing run rates, tooling cost, full part serviceability, and ease of installation on the production line· Create high quality engineering drawings in accordance to published standards· Work closely with purchasing, technical program management and engineers· Ensure that the designs are completed on time, to allow sourcing and part delivery to support the various vehicle program builds *This is what you’ll need: · At least 5 years combined experience of bracket and sheet metal design, ideally in the automotive sector, though other comparable industries may be considered· B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or higher, though alternative qualifications / experience may be considered· High level of proficiency in CAD design with Catia V5/V6. Additionally, FEA software to allow optimized designs· Deep knowledge of materials widely used for injection moulding applications, and understanding of the best applications for each· Deep knowledge of a variety of metals and their coating for brackets, and where best to apply them· Detailed knowledge of injection moulding tooling, and how best to design a part to minimize tooling costs· Familiarity with the tooling options involved in sheet-metal design, such as laser / waterjet cutting, brake pressing and stamping· Familiarity with the various types of welding, and where best to apply them· Ability to conduct mouldflow analysis· Ability to create high quality engineering drawings for both prototype and production brackets, with appropriate notes, weld symbols, GD&T (ASME Y14M) etc· Ability to conduct stack up tolerance analysis· Proven DFM technique usage to effectively kick off dies/tooling· Previous experience and exposure to cost evaluation of designs (development timing + piece price + tooling cost)
