The VP of Product Role
At Petal, our ability to innovate and rapidly iterate on product is a core competitive advantage and the utmost focus for the company. The VP of Product is the leader of the product organization tasked with inventing, defining, building and iterating on products that reimagine people’s relationship with their money.
The VP of Product is a member of the leadership team reporting directly to the CEO. In this role, you would be responsible for evolving the strategic vision of the company with the CEO and creating alignment across the rest of the organization: determine priorities, develop the product roadmap, and carry plans forward to implementation.
Tactically, the VP of Product owns product definition, creation, implementation and improvement end-to-end. In addition, you would lead the hiring and processes required to be successful.
- Co-lead product strategy:
- Define and drive the product strategy along with the CEO and others on the leadership team
- Drive innovation to keep Petal at the cutting edge--inventing the future of financial services
- Develop and evaluate new product ideas and opportunities, as well as improve existing products and features
Shepherd new ideas through to implementation: research, product planning, discovery, development, execution
Run the product and design team:
Continue to build a world-class product team through diverse, proactive recruiting and training
Manage and develop PMs, designers, user researchers through coaching, feedback, and mentorship
Proactively think through organizational design and development as team grows and needs change; collaborate closely with CTO on how product and engineering work together
Set and communicate the vision for the Product team
Develop scalable product development processes:
Foster a product culture that understands the importance of rapid testing, learning and iteration
Develop a deep understanding of the customer, and create processes to institutionalize the collection and incorporation of customer feedback and market research
Reinforce continuous innovation and a safe-to-fail environment where it’s okay to take chances, while also mitigating business-threatening risks
Apply data in making product decisions and setting prioritiesContinue to iterate processes with CTO and other functional leaders as team grows
Support company-wide development:
Represent the needs of Product on the Leadership Team, while also wearing a Company-wide hat
Work cross-functionally among engineering, marketing, risk, compliance, operations, finance and capital markets to balance competing forces, negotiate optimal outcomes and prioritize
Understand the perspective and role of each function in the business and evaluate competing interests in light of top-line business objectives
Shape and embody Petal culture and values, and instill those values in the product team and throughout the product itself
Skills and experience requirements
- Technical skills:
- 10+ years experience in product management with at least 2 years working with a consumer-facing digital product
- Deep understanding of product development process end-to-end
- Technical background or extensive experience with technical side of product development process
- Adept in user research, data driven experimentation, sprints and rapid iteration
Experience with financial products and behavioral science is a plus
Excellent quantitative, written and verbal communication skills, including executive level presentations.
Leadership, ownership, self-motivation, and drive to deliver results in dynamic, ever-changing environments.
Strong business acumen, judgment, and intellectual capacity.
Prioritization, decision-making in complex situations with competing inputs.
Comfort with ambiguity in both strategic and tactical matters.
Multi-tasking, juggling very large workload without dropping balls.
Maturity and diplomacy in handling interpersonal dynamics.
Genuine interest and talent in being both a student and a teacher. Despite your extensive experience, there is a lot to learn from others in different functions and others have a lot to learn from you. Patient and good at breaking down complex ideas. Low ego and low self-orientation is a requirement; you measure your success by the success of your organization overall.
Penchant for rolling-up-sleeves and getting hands dirty in building, testing, and collaborating on risk models and activities. We’re all player-coaches, so don’t expect to delegate the work to someone else.
Track record of success in collaborating with team members across functions, tenures, levels of risk understanding.
Comfort in a fast-changing start-up environment. Ability to build a business and function in ambiguity.
