Who we are:

Pepper is a team of builders on a mission to design a better way for restaurants and suppliers to work together. We’re here to drive positive change around how restaurants manage their back-of-house operations and optimize for greater transparency, time-saving efficiencies, and tighter-knit relationships across the entire restaurant supply chain end-to-end.

Our mobile app offers chefs and restaurant operators a virtual purchasing solution for their day-to-day supply challenges. It’s a single place to order ingredients and inventory, track deliveries, organize invoices, and manage relationships with suppliers - all completely free for restaurants to use.

On the supplier side, our technology streamlines workflow for incoming orders and gives vendors the ability to receive orders in a clear and consistent format for every purchase. With hours saved each week on order processing times and few delivery mistakes made across the board, suppliers who use Pepper leverage a unique opportunity to grow their customer base by offering restaurants a first-class ordering experience they’ll love.

As a new and fast-growing startup based in NYC, we’re looking for scrappy, high-energy self-starters to join our team of experienced hospitality, food, and tech entrepreneurs. If you’re passionate about digital transformation in the food industry and eager to hit the ground running at an early-stage company with big ambitions, then we’d love to hear from you.

Who we hope you are:

Our team is looking for a sharp, high-energy Software Engineer to help us build a fast, reliable, and scalable backend for our company from scratch, and a beautiful, useful, and snappy mobile app. While no two days here are ever the same, Software Engineers at Pepper should be fired up to own and support:

>> Overall Backend Design: Should we stay on our current serverless/GraphQL architecture or migrate to having our own set of microservices or monolith? What’s the right choice for developer velocity and scalability as we grow?

>> Analytics: Help our operations team build and optimize data pipelines to better understand our quickly growing user base. As we gather data about the food supply chain, how can we store, aggregate, and surface it to restaurants and suppliers in a fast and flexible way?

>> Document OCR: How can we build the world’s best set of data about the food supply chain by building a state-of-the-art processor for the paper trail of invoices generated by restaurants and suppliers, especially when they arrive to us crumpled, damaged or put together in confusing formats?

Must-haves for this role:

>> 3-5 years experience building high-quality, scalable software

>> Proficiency with both SQL and NoSQL databases

>> Experience with one or more languages like Python, Java, C++, or Go

>> Experience building frontend experience

>> Experience with React and React Native a bonus

>> Ability to break down and solve complex business requirements as well as adapt and learn quickly

What you’ll love about us:

Being an early-stage company means we’re building something from the ground up - and that includes a fair, fun, and supportive office culture that keeps everyone excited to continue growing together.

>> A powerhouse team of seasoned entrepreneurs who work hard to achieve amazing impact and have scaled some of the world’s leading tech companies, but don’t take themselves too seriously

>> “Front of the line” access to future growth opportunities and professional development

>> Deep, immersive understanding of how startups get built with an extremely rewarding learning curve for top performers

>> The ability to work in our flagship WeWork Labs Chelsea office alongside dozens of other early-stage food startups or remotely from home

>> Plentiful office snacks and a daily $20 stipend, so lunch is on us

One of our top priorities is ensuring a diverse, safe, and inclusive workplace where we all learn from one another. We are an equal opportunity employer and welcome people from all backgrounds, experiences, abilities, and perspectives to apply.
