The Role

Orphidia is leading the development of next generation medical technology which will transform medical testing and the healthcare industry. Our portable device can simultaneously run all the common lab tests for liver, kidney, cardiac, thyroid, and hormone levels with results provided within 20 minutes. We now have a fast-growing, multidisciplinary team of more than 20 engineers, biologists and technicians. Orphidia is funded by well known Silicon Valley investors and is targeting rapid expansion in the US medical market through its partnerships with premier US health systems. The process of performing the most common blood tests hasn't changed in decades: once the patient visits the doctor's clinic, the test is done in a lab off premise, extending the time to diagnosis by weeks. But 1 in 3 people who die from chronic diseases every year could live longer if their disease was diagnosed earlier. Our device will change that by enabling rapid, lab-accurate, simultaneous, measurement of multiple biomarkers anywhere and anytime from a single blood drop. Orphidia's technology will change healthcare, expanding access to testing globally and enabling the practice of medicine to become truly information based.

The Role

We are looking for an individual with strong technical skills in mechanical design and product development. At first you will be primarily responsible for developing mechanical control and fluid control methods in conjunction with bioengineers and electrical engineers. Subsequent to this you will be responsible for developing a chassis enabling integration of microfluidics/optics/electronics subsystems. Attention to detail and creativity in your approach to both mechanical design and to fabrication methods/materials are equally important.

Candidate Profile

Candidates must possess prototyping skills (Additive manufacturing as a minimum), analytical ability, and must have a solid and demonstrated creative approach to mechanical engineering, particularly as related to biomedical product development, and preferably some understanding of microfluidics. Knowledge of material properties and their influence on fabrication is essential and an understanding of biological processes would be advantageous. A broad knowledge of novel fluid control methods at small volumes (pumps and valves) is desired, with the ability to miniaturise microelectromechanical systems. The successful candidate will also be flexible, able to respond to and contribute to a broad array of challenges both technical and non-technical. The successful candidate will need to:

• Apply theoretical knowledge of design principles, and issues contributed by the R&D team, for solving technical problems.
• Design system components, with understanding of how they could be translated to high volume fabrication.
• Build proof of principle models
• Participate in team ideation sessions with other team members and participate in periodic design reviews of projects.
• Be accountable for the success of assigned tasks and deliverables including planning, implementation, monitoring.
• Create/develop new test methods, statistical experiments, limited verification studies
• Develop innovative and feasible solutions at the component & system assembly level of design for teams within the organisation as required
• Necessary to be capable of development of detailed CAD models and drawings (e.g., Solidworks, FeatureCam or equivalent CAD packages) for internal and external manufacture.
• Have a strong commercial focus, with strong supplier links and interactions with ODMs
• Demonstrated leadership potential to co-ordinate and manage projects and teams.
• Experience of working within an ISO environment (13485, 9001)

Advantageous if you also have:

• Regulatory standards/guidelines (e.g., CE, FDA, MDD, cGMP) and/or project management training
• Understanding of materials used in medical devices, and biocompatibility/sterility issues
• IVD product development (biosensors, microfluidics) and interfacing of disposables with hardware.
