IonQ is seeking an experienced product designer with UX research or similar background to help us design and build the world’s most powerful quantum computing platform. This designer will operate across the entire customer base and lifecycle, helping us better understand our internal and external users, and define new interaction paradigms and mental models for this emergent field. This includes work on our externally-facing quantum cloud platform, which lets anyone in the world create and run quantum algorithms, custom tools and control surfaces to help our internal team of physicists control groundbreaking quantum hardware,

Our ideal candidate is an experienced designer with a strong background in design research and usability, who thrives in turning the unknown into knowledge and actionable insight. You will help us create a holistic understanding of our users and their needs to help inform a consistent, accessible, usable, and beautiful experience across our software and hardware. You will not be comfortable operating in a research only-mode, but instead prefer to bring insight to bear by designing and shipping end-to-end features, interfaces, and user experiences.

Responsibilities:
• Identify research questions, and then build and execute plans to answer them
• Surface and socialize research insights to the design team and the business at large, helping to build customer empathy across the organization
• Work with the greater design and engineering team to use research to conceptualize, design, and critically, ship product features across our suite of products
• Collaborate and communicate with business development, physicists, external vendors, engineering, and your fellow designers
• Effectively self-manage multiple projects, priorities, deadlines, and deliverables

Required:
• 5+ years experience researching, building and shipping features and products for multiple platforms and paradigms
• A portfolio of shipped product design that showcases your skills, and addresses not just what you’ve made, but why it’s the best solution, and what impact it had on the users and business you made it for
• Ability to drive UX research from conception to product, in a variety of modalities (ethnography/observational, usability testing, gathering insight from usage data, etc).
• Experience using UX research to help inform product decisions
• Experience shipping and iterating on products in the real world
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and an ability to communicate research insights to diverse audiences including designers, product managers, engineers, and business leaders

Desired:
• Familiarity with lightweight (low-deliverable, fast turnaround) and guerrilla research methods
• Experience working in highly technical domains like aerospace or high-performance computing
• Experience with collaborative co-design and facilitation techniques
