HBO Max won't hit AT&T data caps, but Netflix and Disney Plus will

  • The Verge
  • this week
  • HBO Max, AT&T’s big bet on the future of streaming, will be excused from AT&T’s mobile data caps, while competing services like Netflix and Disney Plus will use up your data.
  • HBO Max is using AT&T’s “sponsored data” system, which technically allows any company to pay to excuse its services from data caps.
  • But since AT&T owns HBO Max, it’s just paying itself: the data fee shows up on the HBO Max books as an expense and on the AT&T Mobility books as revenue. For AT&T as a whole, it zeroes out.

HBO Max was downloaded by 87K new users yesterday

  • TechCrunch
  • this week
  • The app store intelligence firm Sensor Tower says HBO Max was downloaded by nearly 87,000 new users across Apple’s App Store and Google Play.
  • That number might seem pretty low compared to other streaming launches — like the 4 million first-day installs for Disney+, or even the 300,000 installs for Quibi.
  • Sensor Tower acknowledged that these numbers do not include people who simply updated their old HBO app: previously, HBO Now was averaging 16,000 new installs every day, so that’s 71,000 more downloads than normal.

Hulu launches 'Watch party' test to let you stream videos with friends

  • Variety
  • this week
  • Starting May 28, Hulu is beginning to test Watch Party, its first social feature that will let viewers watch titles together and chat in groups of up to eight people.
  • The feature is currently available only on hulu.com for a select number of titles.
  • The Hulu Watch Party also seems to be designed to drive upgrades to the $11.99 monthly package with no ads: The feature is available only to those who have the pricier subscription VOD tier.
  • Users who have access to the test can launch the experience through the “Watch Party” icon on the Details pages of shows and movies from the service’s library.
  • They will then be given a link to invite their family and friends, who must also subscribe to the Hulu no-ads plan. According to Hulu, participants in a Watch Party must be 18 or older to either start or join a co-viewing session.
