About Flare

Flare is looking for a Software Engineering Lead to join our 5-person seed stage technology startup in Boston. Founded by survivors of assault, Flare is on a mission to redefine how people think about personal safety. The hybrid software/hardware product is a smart bracelet with discreet personal safety features that are customized on our mobile platform to help people navigate uncomfortable and iffy situations. We are backed by top-tier venture capitalists who are passionate about the product we’re launching this year and even more excited about our long-term vision for the company and for personal safety.

The Position

We’re looking for a hands-on engineering leader who can help launch our first-generation product and lead a nimble, collaborative team building a best-in-class integrated experience with a powerful mission. This is a player/coach role with 80% hands-on/20% management in the beginning and 20% hands-on/80% management in the coming year. You will lead our software development and work alongside Touchlab engineers on cutting edge technology. You will be responsible for executing on the business vision in a rapidly evolving business environment, which will require creativity, organization, efficiency, a solid knowledge of project management and experience launching new products.

Key Responsibilities:

Collaborate with key stakeholders through the product development process to plan, manage, build, and launch new software experiences that over-deliver on promised timelines and expectations. Ensure we’re shipping high-quality code and software experiences by creating transparent KPIs and implementing strong QA practices while promoting ownership and accountability.
Manage technical breadth: source, design scopes of work, and manage contractors to fill technical gaps and deliver key projects quickly to supplement the work being done by the Flare engineering team
People-management: Shape, manage and grow the software engineering culture and development processes and put the tools in place to deliver rapidly and consistently as we scale.
Hands-on mobile app development and testing initially

Bachelor of Science in Computer Science or Software Engineering (or equivalent)
Senior level expertise/knowledge of frontend software engineering, in particular best practices around scrum management, iOS and Android development, testing and deployment
A successful history of taking products through launch and leading teams through rapid iteration cycles
Experience with several of the following languages, technologies, and frameworks:
React Native
Kotlin Multiplatform
Interest in or experience with IoT devices and beacon technology
Authorized to work in the U.S
