This position is part of a small team of developers who work with campus researchers to build and maintain scientific research supporting applications within Duke University. The initial project will be to be part of a larger team to complete work on an ongoing project that enables capture and searches against an XML centric database containing a wide variety of physical properties of nano particles embedded in polymers. This position will have a leadership role in making sure the application and supporting services are production ready. The applicant must demonstrate the ability to work in an agile DevOps model that spans institutions. Good communication skills are required.


Collaborate with other developers, systems administrators, and other IT staff
Work with customers to iteratively identify scientific requirements and propose solutions
Employ agile principles to research, design and develop software solutions to meet the needs of a community of materials researchers.
Troubleshoot and optimize applications for performance
Participate in educational and higher education initiatives
Document all work efforts in relation to customer requests, change requests, maintenance activities, and others as identified
Provide direction on the creation of a production system including consistent development methodologies using modern best practices for application development.
Review and understand new or existing applications making use of them in our architecture

BA or BS (Computer Science, Engineering or related field) or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.



Software Developer:
Proven problem solving
Software and system change and release management, preferably with experience with frequent deployments
Problem tracking/resolution
Agile software practices
Experience with Python in a web centric framework
Understanding of web application request and response lifecycle
Expertise in web markup and styling languages (HTML, CSS, XML)
Experience with automated testing methodologies including Unit/Integration/Acceptance/Performance testing
Experience with version management and source control systems, particularly git
Experience developing applications for UNIX(Linux) environments
Familiarity with Structured Query Language (SQL)
Experience with Semantic Web technologies including XML, RDF, SPARQL and Ontologies
Understanding of JavaScript programming language (particularly with JavaScript libraries/frameworks like Vue.js)
Experience with MongoDB and relational databases from a development and operational standpoint


Experience with Django for web application development
Experience with MongoDB
Experience with job sequencing and scheduling
Experience with cloud computing services such as AWS and Google Cloud
Experience developing with web technologies (HTML5, CSS3)
Understanding of software development lifecycle
Web user interface design and implementation
Understanding of integrating with MATLAB or other simulation software
Understanding of search technologies like ElasticSearch
