Databook tackles a core problem for enterprise sales and marketing teams: understanding their customers. Our customer intelligence platform is already transforming how sales teams at Fortune 500 companies and hyper-growth software companies go to market. We provide real-time insights and personalized recommendations that help our customers prioritize the right accounts and pitch the most relevant solutions to their customers.

Recently backed by Threshold Ventures, we are rapidly expanding our team and looking for exceptional talent to help shape our product into a category-defining offering. By joining Databook, you’ll become a part of a friendly, entrepreneurial, and collaborative culture that is changing the way enterprise sales is done. Our offices are conveniently located in Palo Alto, just a short walk from the California Avenue Caltrain stop.

The role
What would you say to being one of the first engineers to join a start-up, just at the moment when we are ramping up our growth? How do you feel about being a key contributor to building a solid and smart engineering team from scratch? If this sounds exciting to you, and you are one of that rare breed who wants to play an active role in building a company, then Databook is the place for you and we’d love for you to join us!

At Databook Engineering, we believe a Software Engineer needs to be involved in the full cycle of the development process: from requirement interpretation to technical analysis, implementation, testing, documentation and maintenance of the code. We don’t believe in creating different tiers of engineers where the full responsibility of a phase falls under a specific role.

As our first dedicated backend engineer, you’ll be taking ownership of the core of Databook’s web application, the Databook API implemented on node.js/express and the associated diverse data stores (Mongo, Postgres, Redis and Elastic). We’ll need you to move fast, and change hats frequently: today you could be implementing the latest customer feature; tomorrow you may be experimenting and analyzing the feasibility of adding a model that dynamically generates real-time text insights based on financial data. The final goal will be for you to be the key to building a strong backend team.

At Databook we’ll always encourage you to innovate. Databook will provide you with the means and tools you need to expand your knowledge and develop your engineering career.

This is a full-time onsite position at our Palo Alto office.

What you’ll be doing

- Write reusable, testable, and efficient server-side code
- Design and implement low-latency, high-availability, and performant services that are crucial to Databook’s main architecture
- Translate Product Requirements into User Stories that can easily be estimated, implemented, tested, and deployed
- Liaise with internal stakeholders (Sales, Marketing, Product) to ensure the product meets the Customer’s expectations
- Monitor and maintain backend services

What we’re looking for

Technical Requirements:
- Expertise in Javascript, with demonstrable experience developing web applications using Node.js and Express
- 3+ years hands-on professional experience developing backend software
- Experience implementing RESTful APIs
- Experience with integration and interaction with SQL (Postgres) and NoSQL (MongoDB, Redis) databases
- Comfortable integrating with different Cloud Services (Heroku, Google Cloud, AWS)
- Proficient understanding of code versioning tools, such as Git
- Familiarity with the Agile Development Framework and ideally, with the Attlassian set of tools (Jira and Confluence)

Soft Skills:
- Adaptable person, willing to wear multiple hats and take ownership of any part of the code
- Someone who, by default, chooses “We” over “I”
- The understanding that “nothing is perfect” and the willingness to continuously improve without getting lost on refining
- A collaborative and empathetic approach to everyday tasks and personal interactions
- Experience of working in a start-up or fast-paced environment, and a willingness to pitch in where and when needed!

Other skills we’d love to find in you (nice to haves)
- Hands-on experience with Redis and Elasticsearch is a big plus
- Experience with Python scripting
- Practical understanding of machine intelligence (AI/ML/NLP/NLG) and experience with related python libraries is a plus
- Potential interest in taking up a leadership position in the future

Why you should choose us
- You will join an early-stage Enterprise tech business with the opportunity to be part of explosive growth over the next few years
- We are working with some of the world’s largest and fastest-growing companies and we are looking for rapid growth
- Working with an extraordinary team of smart, creative, fun and highly motivated people
- Tremendous opportunity to solve some of the industry’s most exciting problems
- Benefits package, including health insurance (vision and dental too) for employees, Paid Time Off, 401k matching and equity
