About Us:

Cloud Ag is an AgTech startup applying remote sensing and novel analytics to power the next wave of actionable, real-time farm management insights. Founded in 2017 from research at Brown University and backed by Lightspeed Venture Partners, Cloud Ag is changing the way the agriculture industry makes decisions. We’re looking for a talented, motivated Software Engineer who will design and build our next-generation aerial sensing system.

Right now, farmers spend millions of dollars on agronomy solutions, yet 20% of the food they plant never makes it to harvest. Nationwide, this amounts to a $440 billion annual loss and means that critical resources like land, water, and fertilizer are often overused. At Cloud Ag, we’re using recent advances in broadband spectral imaging technology to generate insights with a precision never before seen in the Ag industry. Our airborne sensing packages collect up to 300x more features than existing imagery.

An ideal candidate for the Software Engineer, Sensor Integration role should have practical experience, a love of experimentation, and a passion for the problem we’re trying to solve. In this position, you will design and build the embedded software that powers our airborne sensing system. Above all, the system you help develop will be responsible for producing reliable and high-quality data that serves as the bedrock of Cloud Agronomics’ analytics efforts.

What You’ll Do:

- Design and implement low and mid-level software architecture for a high-performance aerial sensing system.
- Integrate external sensors (e.g. imagers, inertial units) with Linux-based system.
- Perform hardware-level sensor synchronization.
- Develop real-time data acquisition and storage schema.
- Collaborate closely with Cloud Agronomics’ cloud and spectral science teams to validate and test your solutions.

About You:

- You’re adaptable, driven, and have at least a BS in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
- You’re self-motivated and love to build new things from the ground up.
- You enjoy tinkering with electronics.
- You have proven experience with writing production C/C++ on Linux, shell scripting, multithreading, and testing/debugging.
- You have experience with system-level sensor integration and hardware synchronization (e.g. digital imagers, GPS, IMU, etc.)
- You’re familiar with a variety of communication protocols and peripheral interfaces (e.g. RS232, I2C, UART, SPI, USB, etc.)
- You’re a team-player that will work with others at Cloud Agronomics to define prototyping scope and product deliverables.

Pluses:

- Familiarity with Python.
- Experience with computer architecture and choosing hardware componentry.
- Experience programming microcontrollers.
- Prior experience developing for aerial/UAV platforms.
- Prior experience developing camera-based sensor systems.
