The marketing spendings for one new artist amount to an average of $370 000. But only 1 out of 20 new artists will turn out to be profitable. In most cases labels lose money and artists remain unheard due to a lack of information about poten- tial fans and markets. Currently there are about 6 200 000 songs on Spotify that have never been heard once. Automated curation by music streaming services distorts data about the listener's preferences because the algorithms favor artists that are already popular. For that reason famous musicians are disproportionately overrepresented The music industry needs honest and actionable data to get insights in target groups to base their business decisions on.
